How a Trump Family-Tied Luxury Resort Sparked Albania’s “Flamingo Revolution”
What started as a fight to protect an ecologically sensitive coastal area has turned into the largest civil protest in the country’s recent history.

Unglaublich.
Monday is the deadline for public comment! The Heritage Foundation has been mobilizing its members to leave comments in favor of the rule change, so every unique comment matters (don’t use a form letter or copy/paste—similar comments are batched and treated as one).
There's an OMB rule change that would require political oversight of scientific grants, and could pull any that don't "reflect presidential priorities" Another country has tried this before! It was the USSR and it was called Lysenkoism. By @thsaey.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/omb-...
No surprise. Governments that seek to maximise profits for the few, by all means, won't let anything stand on their way - be it nature, peoples' lives and wellbeing, or our future. Will the Albanian demonstrations expand? I'm looking forward to see, when the ''enough is enough'' moment comes.

"We know how to mourn grandparents, spouses, friends, and neighbors, but we do not know how to mourn disappearing species, damaged rivers, altered coastlines, democratic institutions, or the healthy futures we expected to inherit." www.theguardian.com/environment/...
We know how to mourn other humans – but what about ecological grief?
In Iceland, people commemorated its first glacier formally declared lost to climate change. Western culture needs more of these rituals

Our paper in @globalchangebio.bsky.social 🎉 We analyzed 1,921 soils from 33 countries to show how climate and agriculture shape soil microbiomes. Pesticides & fertilizers reshape microbial communities and ecological networks despite higher diversity in agricultural soils. 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/gcb....
My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social Only 10-15% of the EU's cattle herd is needed to graze every biodiversity-rich field there is. Most cattle never set hoof on pasture. They're fed grain, packed onto fertilized monocultures. The solution isn't more grazing. It's fewer animals, better raised.
My talk at @scbeurope.bsky.social - 2 Put every EU cow on pasture and you'd need more land, more emissions, more imported crops from elsewhere. Too many animals for the land we have. The fix isn't more grazing — it's less and better. #Agroecology #LivestockStrategy
At #ECCB2026 we speak with concern about #FoodSecurity due to heat, droughts, pollinators' loss, soil erosion, etc. Meanwhile at X, DG Agri happily anounces a promising year for... oilseed, dairy, pigmeat, poultry. @ec.europa.eu didn't u shout food security? Can't u take your own claims seriously?
Ugandan farmers have filed a lawsuit in London against TotalEnergies' EACOP project. They warn that the 1,443 km (897-mile) oil pipeline threatens 16 protected areas, including vital water sources for 40 million people, and note that more than 100,000 residents have already faced displacement.

When politicians and policies fail, i.e. when upscaling of solutions is impossible, outscaling is an excellent alternative - namely replicating what works, instead of awaiting someone else to help. Same might be needed for #agroecology and, more broadly, sustainable agrifood systems.

The Nature Restoration Regulation contains risky exceptions and exemptions. Volker Mauerhofer reminds that NRR should be legally interpreted in the narrow sense, i.e. complementary to the BD and HD. Court will likely have an important role. #ECCB2026
At #ECCB2026, Stefan Kreft presents a MARISCO-based 'strategic situation analysis for European forest biodivetsity'. Are we bending the curve? No Are we going to meet the 'biodiversity positive' target by 2030? No.

Brussels late night under major heat: the city stinks and people are melting. Under these conditions, the big signs all over the Parliament and around it could be read: ''Democracy inaction''. We all pay the price of COPI, the Cost Of Policy Inaction
Agriculture, gold mining, road expansion. Does it need mentioning that much of this is driven by soy for export as feed? People are quite literally eating the Amazon.
The Amazon lost 736,484 hectares of forest in 2025, according to a new MAAP analysis. While the data shows some positive year-on-year trends, illegal clearing remains a major threat inside protected areas. Driven by El Niño, looming heat waves and dry conditions could worsen the destruction.
