Always digressing …

A notification popped up on my homescreen, from Europcar, apparently they have been missing me and would I like to book a car. For far too long I considered hiring an EV and parking it in front of the house so I can sit there with the air conditioning on max.

Bumerang 🪃 War einmal ein Bumerang; War ein weniges zu lang. Bumerang flog ein Stück, Aber kam nicht mehr zurück. Publikum – noch stundenlang – Wartete auf Bumerang. Joachim Ringelnatz (1883 - 1934), banned by the Nazis as a "degenerate artist"

Always amazes me how sticky tradition can be for smaller vessels. An Indian Ocean sailer of the 1500’s, having hitchhiked with Dr Who, would most likely find these moored fishing dhows reassuringly familiar. Till they start moving without sails or oars of course.

Moored fishing vessels built along traditional dhow designs somewhere off the Arabian peninsula.

right now the astronauts are calling houston because the computer on the spaceship is running two instances of microsoft outlook and they can't figure out why. nasa is about to remote into the computer

I find this implausible high. Is this a case of “well, it didn’t happen to me but someone I know and not exactly in the last year but it *COULD* have”? 14% of theft from vehicles - people lock their cars usually so that’s a lot of broken windows I simply must not have noticed.

One in four drivers 'has been victim of vehicle crime' | LBC

Despite the lower incidence of vehicle crime outside towns and cities, rural motorists “are equally, if not more, worried about being targeted by thieves and vandals”, says the RAC.

What is the legal basis for marking/enforcing spelling, grammar, punctuation in UK schools/unis? I know Dr Johnson did his dictionary with help from Lord Blackadder the 3rd, but is there for instance a act of parliament? Did the department or minister responsible for education send out a memo?

As the mainstream media skirts around this like a skittish cat, can someone/anyone explain the logic of charging Maduro with violating US gun laws by having some machine guns in Little Venice? Asking for a concerned friend who has some haggis in the fridge …

Flying to Malpensa planning to drive a hire car 1000 miles to Sambuca di Sicilia (and presumably back) for 1 week house hunting but giving up after up after being exhausted after queuing 2.5 hours due to teething problems with the new border control systems … feels like fate had a very merciful day

We're rethinking our dream to buy a home in Sicily after border nightmare

New EU border systems, which came into force in mid-October, turned a couple's planned one-week fact-finding trip into 'a nightmare'

But gin the auld fowks’ tales are richt An’ ghaists come hame on Hallow nicht, O freend o’ freends! what wad I gie To feel ye rax yer hand to me Atween the dark an’ caun’le-licht? —Violet Jacob, “Hallowe’en” (COUNTRY LIFE, 1920) Jacob’s son, Harry, was killed at the Somme in 1916 #Halloween #poem

Hallowe’en
Violet Jacob

The tattie-liftin’s nearly through,
They’re ploughin’ whaur the barley grew,‍‍
And aifter dark, roond ilka stack,‍‍
Ye’ll see the horsemen stand an’ crack
O Lachlan, but I mind o’ you!

I mind foo often we hae seen
Ten thoosand stars keek doon atween‍‍
The nakit branches, an’ below‍‍
Baith fairm an’ bothie hae their show,
Alowe wi’ lichts o’ Hallowe’en.

There’s bairns wi’ guizards at their tail
Clourin’ the doors wi’ runts o’ kail,‍‍
And fine ye’ll hear the skreichs an’ skirls‍‍
O’ lassies wi’ their droukit curls
Bobbin’ for aipples i’ the pail.

The bothie fire is loupin’ het,
A new heid horseman’s kist is set‍‍
Richts o’ the lum; whaur by the blaze‍‍
The auld ane stude that kept yer claes—
I canna thole to see it yet!

But gin the auld fowks’ tales are richt
An’ ghaists come hame on Hallow nicht,‍‍
O freend o’ freends! what wad I gie‍‍
To feel ye rax yer hand to me
Atween the dark an’ caun’le licht?

Awa in France, across the wave,
The wee lichts burn on ilka grave,‍‍
An’ you an’ me their lowe hae seen—‍‍
Ye’ll mebbe hae yer Hallowe’en
Yont, whaur ye’re lyin’ wi’ the lave.

There’s drink an’ daffin’, sang an’ dance
And ploys and kisses get their chance,‍‍
But Lachlan, man, the place I see‍‍
Is whaur the auld kist used to be
And the lichts o’ Hallowe’en in France!
