Featured Book Salon: Growth, Democracy or Climate Action?The New Political Trilemma of Advanced Capitalism 16:00 - 17:30 - 1st July, 2026 A.132 (Amphi Montesquieu) - Sciences Po This book panel will feature a presentation and discussion of Growth, Democracy or Climate Action? The New Trilemma of Advanced Capitalism. The book identifies a structural trilemma at the heart of contemporary capitalist democracies: governments cannot simultaneously pursue economic growth, democratic legitimacy, and effective climate action. They can achieve, at most, two of these three objectives. This is not a policy failure or a problem of political will. It is a structural condition of advanced capitalism. The book develops this trilemma as a novel analytical framework for comparative political economy, and uses it to examine three pathways through which governments are attempting to navigate the trade-offs: the Liberal Status Quo, the Big Green State, and, more speculatively, Degrowth. Each pathway, the authors argue, misplaces political agency: in markets and technology, in technocratic institutions, or in scientific prescription. Each underestimates the centrality of organised political conflict to any viable transition. The deepest challenge is not technical but political. The scale of structural transformation required to reach carbon neutrality cannot be achieved within the liberal rulebook that has governed the politics of democratic capitalism for the past century. Existing approaches in comparative political economy have largely treated the politics of ecological transition as a secondary concern. This book puts it at the centre, and insists that taking organised political conflict seriously is not optional. Without that, the trilemma cannot be resolved. It can only be evaded.
