Happy July 4th, USA. May the promise of a better nation one day be realized for every one of us who live under its flag; also and independently, may we all finish the day with the same number of fingers as we started it.

So happy to see the details (github.com/apple/truety...) behind the #swift rewrite of the interpreter; performance doesn't just match, it exceeds — and gets Swift's safety features. Not that I need a interpreter myself, but seeing how the code goes together — what's been used — is really cool!

What makes interpreters a pain in the^W^W^W interesting challenge for safety and performance is they defeat lots of tricks compilers can pull to mitigate the cost safety e.g. if the program you're interpreting is what runs the loop indexing into the array, you can't statically hoist those checks.

Navigation Notes – Agentic coding
I don't doubt that jobs associated with software engineering are undergoing a massive sea change. While I was far less certain as to its applicability a year ago, tools like Codex, Claude Code, and OpenCode are effective and - to me - can provide value. These tools are getting better at an extraordinarily high rate, but I don't see it going up forever.

A Reuters photographer captured this image of a page from Pam Bondi's "burn book," which she used to counter any questions from Democratic lawmakers during an unhinged hearing today. It looks like the DOJ monitored members of Congress’s searches of the unredacted Epstein files. Just wow.
The most challenging aspect of software development has been the lack of documentation.
No. Commonsense reform is to burn ICE to the waterline and scatter the rubble so that all of us who value a constitutional republic with a Bill of Rights can prevent such a monstrosity from ever being constructed again. And nothing above is hyperbole. God, but you are not a leader for this time.
Democrats want commonsense reform for ICE: End the roving patrols and racial profiling. Take accountability and abide by the same rules as local police. Masks need to come off, body cameras need to stay on—no secret police in the United States of America.
AOC: I want everybody to understand that the cuts to your health care are what’s paying for this. You get screwed over to pay a bunch of thugs in the street that are shooting mothers in the face.

My fave tip for dev #swiftlang -> Linux, check how your Swift package compiles while on your mac w/ container: container run -it -c 4 -m 8g \ -v "$(pwd):/src" -w src/ \ swift:6.2 sh -c "swift build" (runs a Swift 6.2 image, gives it 4CPU and 8GB, mounts your PWD as "src", and builds)
