Was good to be part of this discussion yesterday with @joshih.bsky.social, @helenawadia.bsky.social and @mathildamall.bsky.social. What's to blame for the decline in local news? I argue it was the sector's acquisition by large corporations, and the rewiring of priorities that came with that.

Loved this episode. As someone who began my journalism career in local news, it’s very important to me to examine what the decline of local news means for community, for disinformation and for democracy. Please give this a listen! ⬇️

Who would be good to come on my news podcast to talk about any or all of these topics?: - the links between crypto and the political right in the UK (e.g. Farage, Harborne) - the Trump family’s entanglement with crypto - crypto being at the centre of betting about geopolitical issues like war

If, like me, you didn't know that several of the players in the men's world cup have been credibly accused of rape/sexual assault, but still allowed to play, it might be worth giving this episode a listen. Especially if you just thought "innocent until proven guilty."

have a column on this in the next issue of the New World - between stuff like below and people turning up to eg non-existent fireworks or Christmas markets, I wonder if AI companies won't regret releasing their products too soon: people can be lazy and/or forgiving but they don't like feeling dumb!

my 75yo mother told me last night that she’s planning to delete Instagram and Facebook because she’s sick of not being able to tell what’s AI and what’s not, and I genuinely don’t think tech companies have reckoned with this kind of move as an actual possibility

Elon Musk has proudly built an AI that can be exploited for what is basically child pornography. Meanwhile, Elon Musk is calling for the execution of his political opponents. And people are… ok with this?

Strange takes on Mayor Zamdani swearing his oath on the Qu’ran. It has nothing to do with church & state. The point of the oath is for the person swearing in to do so upon some text that is sacred TO THEM. Some Presidents swore in w/o any book. John Quincy Adams was sworn on a law book. His choice.
