@IBM - Senior Principal Software Engineer, working on Quarkus. Java Champion, developer, author, #cloud surfer and maker. My views are my own.

I had so much fun writing this talk. It covers important topics such as poo throughput ("pooput"!), whether teaching COBOL should be considered a crime (Dijsktra thought it should), why Quarkus is so efficient, and what AI is going to do to the job market. www.infoq.com/presentation...

The Free-Lunch Guide to Idea Circularity

After weeks of inspiration-free-blankness, inspiration STRUCK, and I've just submitted something for my final Devoxx CFP slot. I'm so excited about each talk I've put in, I don't want to see any of them rejected 🥹 [s/talk/baby]

Argh. For my seven-demo talk, I use desktops to keep everything tidy. Mac doesn't allow naming desktops, but I arrange them in the order I need them. Then, when I do the live demo, I get lost finding the right window. I thought it was just demo-brain, but no – by default Mac rearranges windows.

Riviera Dev is the first conference I've been to which has a full program of physical activities (yoga, pilates, shuffle dance, "footing") alongside the tech talks. As you'd hope, given all that, it also has attendee showers. 🚿

Rare red warning. Risk to life. Stay out of the sun. Avoid unnecessary exposure. Picture editor: "Counterpoint: Run the fun-on-the-beach shots?" We won't improve heat coverage until we stop illustrating public health emergencies with beach photos. www.independent.co.uk/weather/heat...

At J-Spring, @felienne.bsky.social quoting Martin Luther King, quoting Thoreau, who apparently anticipated much of modern technology: "Improved means to an unimproved end." Maybe it's kind of comforting that complaints from 200 years ago are still relevant in these uncertain times?

A hand-drawn slide, with text "Improved means to an unimproved end."

I'm starting to think I need to put image attributions on my slides. I've been reluctant to do that, because it seems self-aggrandising to waste space crediting myself. But, based on the questions I get after every talk, I'm starting to realise it's non-obvious that I'm doing my own illustrations.
