And just from a dad’s perspective, it seems to me one of the explicit aims here is to make black girls feel like they are ugly. Like why else are you angry about a black little mermaid. And yes I take that shit personal.

Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth.
It is genuinely bizarre that we’ve become acclimatized to right wingers throwing a tantrum every time a black person (particularly a black woman) is cast in something, but are also supposed to pretend that this is not racism but related to some other substantive concern.
Feeling overwhelmed with all of this. LISTEN. Another Louisiana resident (Marshawn is the only name we have) testifies against the state’s racial gerrymander, speaking truth to power up and down the hearing room and predicts how this story will end. Speak your truth, fight and believe.
This is particularly maddening because the court allowed the election to go ahead when all the legal facts were exactly the same. The only real new information they have now is what the result was.
BREAKING: In a loss for Democrats, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled the congressional map voters approved last month to counter GOP gerrymanders cannot go into effect. The decision overturns the will of voters for technical reasons and gives Republicans a leg up for the 2026 midterms.
as per melissa's thread, it is really important to understand that a major goal of this administration is the resegregation of key institutions of american society
There is not enough discussion of the EEOC's lawsuit against @nytimes.com for discriminating against a white man. Here's a gift link. Let's get into it.🧵 www.nytimes.com/2026/05/05/b...
this is also one of my hobbyhorses. you want a better caliber of lawmaker? you want to reduce the odds of corruption? pay them more. a lot more.
I wrote a paper about this in 2010, for the Richmond Journal of Law and Public Interest. Basically, low-paying, part-time legislatures serve to enshrine conflicts of interest as a best practice. We should raise pay by 10x.
This dropped around the same time as this interview - Neil Gorsuch on Megyn Kelly’s show. He was talking about how “young conservatives must have courage to stand by their beliefs.” Sounds apolitical to me!
NEW: Chief Justice John Roberts bemoans that Americans don't understand how the Supreme Court operates and see justices as "political actors". The court at times simply has to make "unpopular" decisions, he adds: www.nbcnews.com/politics/sup...
so far, much of the analysis of Callais out there is focused on what the Court's rulings did to the Voting Rights Act, which is reasonable but now I want to talk about what the Court did to the Constitution bc the threat of Callais goes far beyond the VRA alone ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/alito...
Samuel Alito Didn’t Only Gut the Voting Rights Act. He Rewrote the Constitution, Too
The Court’s decision in Callais will make it more challenging for Congress to pass laws designed to protect multiracial democracy.

clear goal of republicans in these states is to, in the words of carter glass, “eliminate every Negro voter who can be gotten rid of, legally, without materially impairing the numerical strength of the white electorate.”
The GOP's Louisiana is basically Orban's Hungary. apnews.com/article/new-...
Alito has now written two opinions drastically limiting the fundamental rights of ethnic minorities and women, which was the kind of thing you would have expected from a guy angry about both groups being admitted to Princeton, something known at his confirmation www.nytimes.com/2005/11/27/p...

i was told by john roberts and sam alito that racism is over so i won't worry about white republicans in the south jumping over themselves to end black political representation wherever they can
WaPo reports Louisiana’s governor will announce on Friday that he is suspending the House primaries where people have already started voting and redraw the map; I’d expect them to go for an all-Republican map and eliminate both majority-Black districts, not just one.
We must understand that the Voting Rights Act was not merely about ensuring Black Americans rights, it was about democratizing America. This ruling is not just a decimation of Black rights and Black Americans’ ability to have representation, it is a fatal blow to multiracial democracy.
What happened at the Supreme Court is about anti-Blackness and curtailing Black political power. Trump as a corrective to Obama. Anti CRT/ DEI as a corrective to Black Lives Matter and Black progress in education and the workforce. Anti-Blackness is America’s favorite manner of self-harm.
The "reactionary colorblindess" of the right-wing justices has reached its logical conclusion in finding that it is racist NOT to let Louisiana—and any other state for that matter—discriminate on the basis of race in voting. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
You really cannot overestimate the level of status trauma a lot of white Americans experienced at the election of Barack Obama and how much of our politics is still influenced by it bsky.app/profile/beau...
This is a modern-day Lost Cause campaign to once again white-wash our origin story, erase the true history of the myriad of people who helped build this nation, justify genocide/ slavery by painting an idyllic, racist portrait of an America that never was. You do so to justify the horrors to come.
Here's a transcript of this portion of Trump's speech. Startling to see such unabashed, settler colonial blood and soil stuff being spoken from a WH podium in the 21st century. FWIW, roughly 20% of the population of the colonies in 1776 was comprised of enslaved people of African descent.
Ben Shapiro on Sam Harris conceded the liberal case against Trump — corruption, coup, dictator-talk — then explained why he'll vote Republican anyway. The most clarifying interview I've read in a year, not about who you'd think. www.notesfromthecircus.com/p/the-most-a...

To round out Black Maternal Health Week, I had the opportunity to ask HHS Secretary RFK Jr. straight up what he's doing to ensure Black women don't die during childbirth. He didn't have much of an answer.
Becomes a bit difficult for Democrats to make the case that this is a horrific, corrupt abuse of power (which it is, obviously) since Biden decided to go on a "pre-emptive pardon" spree right before leaving office.
The AP's story on the IOC's new policy mentions that it "also restricts" athletes like two-time Olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya. That word "also" is doing a lot of work. New piece on who this policy is actually about: www.readtpa.com/p/the-iocs-n...
The IOC's New Policy Isn't Really a Trans Story
Every headline says the IOC banned trans women from the Olympics. The athletes who’ll actually be barred are cis women who’ve never heard of the SRY gene.

Hey, if you voted third party in 2024 or didn't vote as protest, I urge you to write down the feelings you're having right now on a piece of paper. Store that little note somewhere safe. In late October, retrieve and read it. Ask yourself if you want to continue feeling that way. Vote accordingly.
