The cover of The Witch of the Wood by Alex Larkspur. It features two men in a dark and gloomy forest. Milo stands in front, a man with tan skin and short, dark hair. He’s dressed in a cream tunic and a green cloak around his shoulders. He has a bow and arrows. He is clearly afraid as he stares at his left hand. His fingers are blackened due a curse that is spreading across his hand. Another man, Cam, is turned the other way and holding Milo’s right hand. He’s looking over his shoulder and looking at Milo with concern. His clothes are bright, colorful, and patchwork. The gloom of the forest mutes their color. The trees seem to close in around them.

A picture of a bare tree
Before
There was a witch hiding in the trees of
Hatwick Wood. They were a steward of the wood, caring for
the alders, maples, and cedar within, watching over the home
of the beasts and birds. The witch ensured that villagers never
took more than they gave, that they were never ravenous in
their consumption of the gifts they were given. This was the
witch’s sacred duty, and their magic had /own wild and free as
they upheld their oath.
The people who survived on the generosity of Hatwick
Wood—every denizen from Farbreak at the south edge to
Northpost on the opposite side—respected the witch.
Although they had never seen the steward of the wood, stories
about the witch had been passed down through the families.
Everyone knew the witch was the forest caretaker, and if
anything ever went wrong, they needed to be found to mend
it. No one knew this better than the Ashtons.
Milo Ashton came from a long line of people who made
their living in the forest. His grandfather, and his grandfather’s
grandfather, and every generation before that were hunters. It

A young man, Micah, kneels in a field of purple flowers. He holds a bundle of purple flowers in one hand while reaching to gather more with his other hand. He has peach skin, golden hair, and brown eyes. He wears a white shirt, brown pants, and a wide-brimmed straw hat with flowers woven through. Behind him, there is a verdant forest of trees. Bees buzz around the man as he looks down towards his work. The title, Sweet & Wild, is above him and the author’s name, Alex Larkspur, is below him.

1: The Forest
[Illustration of flowers)
The trees welcomed Micah Harlow like an old friend even though he had never been in this particular forest. It had been a rainy few days, but the spring morning was finally crisp and cool, not a sweaty, unforgiving, humid monstrosity. Instead, it was a perfect day for foraging. Micah stepped carefully through the trees, humming to himself, avoiding mud puddles as best he could. As he leapt from one root to the next, his worn leather satchel bounced on his hip and the milk bottle in his carry basket fell over. He took a moment to right the bottle—luckily none had spilled—and continued his search.
Sun dappled between the oak leaves and danced on the ground. Birds twittered around him, filling the morning air with their songs. He could hear animals scampering through the underbrush. He straightened his wide-brimmed straw hat and pushed up his sleeves. A grin spread across his freckled face when he spotted exactly what he was looking for.
Every forest, whatever its size, has its guardian spirit. And the forest outside of Roseyard was anything but small. Micah’s mother had always taught him that before taking anything from the forest, you should make an offering to its spirit. They did it every week when she was still alive, back in Steephall, where the woods were considerably

The other young man is Milo. He has tan skin and short dark hair. He's wearing a tan tunic, brown pants, and a green cloak. He looks at Cam nervously while holding his arm. The fingers of one hand are turning black. Three arrows point to him labeled:
- Nervous
- Overapologizes
