Working in the Cambridge University Library today. One of my 'happy places'. The rain is sounding on the roof and I could be at almost any moment in time (except for the MacBook.) Most astonishing though: I am allowed to drink coffee at my table, provided my cup has a lid! 😳

I have put together a little video guide to Nigel Farage's umm... evolving views on hecklers. They seem to be quite dependent on whether the heckler disagrees with him (bad, boring, frightening, dangerous), or shouts abuse at a woman in the street (buy him a pint/give him a peerage).

What was the weirdest thing you learned today? I learned that the bunkers built by the Germans on the Dutch coast during WWII had interior decor in some cases. This one was honest to goodness rag rolled, like it was my aunt’s sitting room back from the 1980s.

Every now & again, it's useful to say why I do all these eel history tweets. Mostly, it's because eels need our help. They're critically endangered, seeing a c.90% drop in population in the last decades. But it's hard to get people to care! 'Cause...eels are gross & slimy. 1/2 🗃️🧪

You can just see one of her fins at the edge of the picture. She looks to be smiling, but not a jovial smile. It's the uncertain but hopeful smile of a man meeting a blind date at a biker bar. Brandabrenda is swimming low in the water, just above a sandy-looking bottom. Her shadow looms just below her, a negative-spaced eel that reminds you of the fragility of meaning and the patience of the following dark. Imagine, if you will, that this is the last eel in the world. And *you* have to break the news to her. How would you feel? Wouldn't it be better if you could tell her that a renewed focus on eels in human history has led to a revival of the species? Let's do that. Brandbrenda deserves some good news. we know how charlatans rise through politics and media, because both are kakistocracies swarming with sociopaths. but I think we need to know how people like David Frost and Simon Case rose through the civil service, because we tend to assume it's better than that
