Countries led by Saudi Arabia & Russia are pressing climate scientists to delay publication of a report, so it's not ready for a major evaluation of country commitments on cutting emissions Even in scientific processes the fingers of oil interests cause trouble www.theguardian.com/environment/...

IPCC is under pressure to delay publication of key global climate report

AR7 report was scheduled for 2028 in time for Cop33 summit but some petro-states and major developing countries want to postpone it

Is “pragmatic” the new, “grown up” word? Andy, there’s nothing “pragmatic” about drilling for more oil & gas - to even consider it with the planet literally on fire is total madness. How many times must we say it will do nothing for energy bills or security? It would be an act of utter recklessness

Burnham promises ‘pragmatic’ approach to North Sea oil and gas

PM tells reporters the government cannot ignore the energy resource ‘when people are struggling’

Hard to think of a more deeply damaging start to Burnham’s premiership than giving green light to new oil & gas in N. Sea, if true. It won’t lower bills or lead to greater energy security but will drive an even hotter planet. What a terrible signal to give to rest of the world #ClimateVandalism

Breaking News! y-axis alert! Nino 3.4 sea surface temperatures are now more than 3 standard deviations above the 1991-2020 mean, forcing an extension of the y-axis up to 3.5σ. And that line way at the bottom? That's 1988.

Gigatons? Metric tons? Megatons? Carbon Dioxide, Methane, F-Gases? 100 years? 20 years? Wow, greenhouse gas emissions are hard to understand sometimes. That's why we built the "Carbon in Context" website that helps navigate these confusing terms. Check it out! drawdown.org/carbon-in-co...

UK folks, let's jump on this AI regulation petition the Society of Authors emailed out! It's an actual parliament one so the government HAS to respond if it reaches the signature threshold. It calls for regulations to make AI developers disclose copyrighted works trained on. Sign & repost!! ❤️

Do you want to see the "big picture" on climate change? Here it is. Emissions are on the left, and include CO2, CH4, N2O, and f-gases. Natural CO2 sinks (from healthy forests & oceans) are on the right. And carbon removal, what little there is, is on the right, too. All expressed as GWP100.

Sustaining food, health, governance and other human systems will be much, much more difficult between 1.5°C and 2.0°C than now. Systems will become dysfunctional and approach or cross interacting critical thresholds, possibly resulting in uncontrollable cascading consequences.

Prof. Eliot Jacobson@climatecasino.net · 7mo ago

Assuming accelerating warming since 1980, the planet will cross 2.0°C sometime around 2036-2037. As for where we are right now with respect to 1.5°C, check your rear-view mirror.

9,600 redundancies at just 24 universities. Imagine what the picture is for the sector as a whole. This is the other half of the student loan scandal picture, which has been national news lately. Nothing at all from the government on a key sector effectively in freefall…

Important paper. Schools are high-risk environments for respiratory disease transmission MAINLY because classrooms are underventilated. This problem has a workable solution - it just needs political will. Air quality is as important as water quality for public health. MT @martinmckee.bsky.social

Our paper modelling transmission risk in schools is published in Nature Communications. **The relative contribution of close-proximity contacts, shared classroom exposure and indoor air quality to respiratory virus transmission in schools** doi.org/10.1038/s414...

An across-government technical assessment published today recognises that "nature is the foundation of national security" and that "every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse". A rational response to this would be to get very serious about nature recovery. www.gov.uk/government/p...
