Medics and law enforcement responded Tuesday to a crash south of Durango where a pickup truck driver – suspected of impairment – allegedly bumped several road cyclists and seriously injured one.

Morphological signatures of locomotion in the earliest (putative) hominins are very challenging to interpret. Some see evidence of bipedalism, others do not. How do we interpret fossil morphology that lacks unambiguous characters seen in extant taxa?

But this remains an issue in a paleontological setting, too. Many of us at this point recognize that the only reliable trait we can use to distinguish fossil hominins from other apes is a reduced upper canine/lower p3 honing complex. It’s a bit of a mess. A fun puzzle, but a bit of a mess.

NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

It is very difficult to overstate the impacts of the cuts to scientific institutions in the US, both in terms of direct cuts to funding and dismantling of critical infrastructure, as well undermining trust in science as a way of knowing and discouraging curiosity about the world.

I just looked at the NSF awards database today (3/1). 475 new awards since Oct 1 (beginning of the fiscal year). ~30 continuing grants. ~100 CAREER awards. Fewer than 350 new, competitive awards in the first five months of FY26. In FY25, NSF made 8,377 awards total. They better get a move on...

To clarify: the helicopters are not the implausible part of this proposal. And the rest of the technology is not necessarily impossible, but 2028 is absurd and it's completely unclear why this should take priority over sample return or the dozens of other fully planned activities now on hold.

Federal law enforcement agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis on Jan. 24 according to local police officials. DHS told Fox News that the man was “armed with a gun”. The entire HR department at the CDC is gone. Everyone at the IRB, which makes sure studies are conducted ethically and rigorously, and the ethics office, which oversee conflicts of interest for CDC leaders and advisory committee members, were also let go. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...
