Everyday I wake up, sip my coffee, look out onto the world and say: "I really think power analyses and hypotheses are a waste of time, I mean, if you have a well motivated and constructed model space and can make reasonable assumptions about your precision, what do the others matter?" It's freeing
Computer: say it. say the words. Me: can we not do this today? Computer: we do this every day. say it. Me: (*sigh) I would like to stay logged in on this device Computer: (*chuckling)
Very surprised to see Jimmy Carr be so well reasoned and nuanced and have such a good take on this. youtu.be/5IJPSqc_mWE

This is an interesting thread and also it reminds me of something that can be such a source of friction for neurodivergent folk. I know many ND people, myself included, who cannot ignore when something feels wrong. Often to our detriment when pushing against the herd.
There was a psych study some years back about our tipping point as individuals to break out of herd mentality - specifically when we pick up on a threat I think it offers insight into why so many terrible people get by in our spaces, even when many of us instinctively pick up on their ick
"but the independence" Yes I guess I never considered the positives of *willingly* choosing an awful time as being why it's actually good.
America the only country where people are so appalled when I tell them I don't drive that I pretend I don't know how to instead of the truth, which is I find it very boring and I'd rather just take the train/bus and chat with someone than spend that time getting mad at random strangers
never thought short form video would be able to capture a type of humor i can only describe as “the far side-esque” but this comes close.

I've ended up on an internet deep-dive so bizarre and wild that I want to write an article about it. It features AI psychosis, social media melt-downs, james bond parties, 90s sci-fi shows, a disbarred lawyer, 3rd party printer toner, and an assault case that caused outcry for legal reform.
I have a theory most people go to reviews after seeing/doing something to validate experience, not before. Particularly common in user review sites (why?!) where most reviews feel like a sub-tweet reply to reviews they don't like.
So many people showing their arses about how much they watch film reviews to give them a cosy film explainer rather than crit

Studio execs are going to want to adapt more poems for the big screen now
I once read an album review in a print magazine that simply stated: "I would rather push barbed wire down my utethra". That was the whole review.
People don't seem to want to admit that "I would be ashamed to have written any part of this" is shockingly harsh language for the average film review. She's within her rights to say it, and she knew exactly the response she would get for it, but it's definitely an eyebrow-raiser
If this had been policy in the 70s (as it partly was), towns would have produced lots of mining engineers & metallurgists just before pits & steelworks closed. As the yanks say, you should skate to where the puck's going, not to where it is. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Everytime I see someone love french food and then say they hate British food, I just think.... Have you eaten either? The things that make rustic french and British food nice are the exact same principles, flavour combinations, and 95% same ingredients. It is the pinnacle of inherited opinions.

As a bit of a movie fan and also one with a lot of takes about cinematography, I'm not going to be able to watch Odyssey for a few years cos the environment is way to hot for me to have the opinions I have on Nolan films lol.

I was saying years ago that reproducibility reform will lead to negligible improvement in reproducibility and makes a huge political excuse for attack disfavoured topics. It took no special foresight to see it coming.

Final week living in Zurich It's absolutely wild to me that I've lived in this town... This suburb of that town... Longer than I've lived in any other places in my entire life. I would never have expected that if you asked me 10 years ago. I didn't know anything about Switzerland 10 years ago
