Bethesda Declaration signer. Science advocate. "... government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Abraham Lincoln 🇺🇸🧪🔬🇺🇦🏳️‍🌈🇬🇱

In 2024 before the election, I was talking to a former senior HHS/NIH official. They said they weren’t *that* worried about a second Trump admin (wrong in retrospect), but said (paraphrase): “If they clean out and replace the Institute directors, well, THAT will be a disaster.” That’s 👇👇 this. 🧵

Jay Bhattacharya somehow both claims to have “cured” the NIH of DEI while simultaneously building a DEI program to favor underfunded universities. And honestly the mental gymnastics boggles the mind. 🤸 open.substack.com/pub/27unihte...

RFK jr overrode the NIH recommendation for NIAID Director to appoint his own preferred candidate (who applied, but NIH declined to interview), per @politico.com. Institute directors have final say on funding decisions and are critical to the integrity of NIH. 🧵 www.politico.com/news/2026/08...

Starting in Spring or Summer 2027 K99/R00 (under its new activity code KT1/R00) will only be available to US citizens, permanent residents, and non-citizen nationals. I am hearing this from many program officers, but NIH has yet to make an official statement to my knowledge.

It’s too late for me and thousands of my colleagues, but there are still hundreds of thousands of hardworking civil servants who don’t deserve this shit, and who throw themselves in front of the Trump/Vought/Miller/Hegseth/et al bus as needed. Please submit a comment on their behalf.

“We are in a Joseph McCarthy moment” is right. One good thing about this is it talks about some goals of the Rand Paul hearing (put Fauci in jail). We should all do more talking about agenda and not get dragged into details.

Watch it till the end. This is moral clarity -- TMZ understands the moment, and what that Rand Paul kangaroo court was, better than any coverage I've seen so far. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zaO...

It's no surprise that the State Dept can't label a map of Africa. They ended USAID, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths. Withholding food and life-saving medicine is a statement that Black Africans do not matter. So why should Rubio care about where they live? www.nytimes.com/2026/07/30/u...

Nigeria, a coastal country in western Africa, was landlocked in the Sahara, among other errors. The department said it had been “hastily altered.”

I had some interactions with Tony Fauci in the early 00s. He expected thoroughness from NIAID staff so that he could make decisions and brief Congress and the media with the latest info on the infectious disease in the news. Never did it seem like he wanted gain or glory.

You can tell a lot about a leader by listening to the people who worked for them. Those who worked for Tony Fauci uniformly respected him. Today’s congressional hearing was a witch hunt, part of a larger effort to undermine science and scientists. www.reuters.com/business/hea...

The fact that a former ICO director of ours must defend himself in front of Senator Paul (a physician himself) on the origins of COVID-19 is deplorable. Support the #NIH. We are here in our personal capacities.

Remember when NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya said there were no banned words and NIH Program Officers were making them up? Here’s the proof he lied: apnews.com/article/cali... I know, Jay Bhattacharya lying is not news. But it’s still really validating to have the admission.
