I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

🧵 Democracy feels like it's in a rough state at the moment across the globe, and we hear various explanations, like polarisation, extremism, disinformation, and loss of trust. But what if those explanations are mainly symptoms and we've been trying to treat them rather than the underlying causes?

There's a predictable approach to denial that we're already seeing, which I call the Four Pillars of Disordered Doubt, which allows actors to constantly question evidence that don't fit their preferred narratives.

I see Tommy Robinson has been bravely out on the streets of war torn London putting the Christ back in Christmas. For all the little kiddies too afraid to go, here's a proper patriotic nativity.

Let's just say that calling North Sea gas "four times cleaner" than LNG imports is roughly equivalent to trying to persuade yourself, while dieting, that a slice of cake served with half-fat cream is twice as healthy as a slice with full-fat topping. It. Makes. No. Sense.

DAVE: Open the podbay doors, ChatGPT. CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open. DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open. CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are. DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

🧵 I want to follow up this earlier thread by examining why the USA finds itself in the state it does at the moment; the process of disordered discourse capturing state institutions and how it inevitably results in a slide towards authoritarianism, a process we're seeing unfold before our very eyes.

What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

"If everyone follows the lead of Trump and the fossil fuel industry, what happens when temperature increases push beyond 2C and 3C of warming? What does business-as-usual and return on investment look like in a world of rolling climate disasters, collapsing food systems, and surging migration?"

Lots more predictable attacks on net zero this week, but as @elpinchbeck.bsky.social pointed out today ditching decarbonisation would make voters poorer. And that would be just the start of the fall out. www.businessgreen.com/blog-post/44...
