Ooh, I'm excited to see that HBO has picked up 'Crazy Rich Asians' as a series, retaining the key cast from the movie Kevin Kwan's gossipy storyworld was always a better fit for TV. It's basically a contemporary Bridgerton
Footage of the French high-schooler protests – the monstrous armoured, helmeted robocops whaling on kids singing their national anthem while kettled into an iconic city square – has me thinking of the Ghorman Massacre in 'Andor' s02 Sorry if this is a facile comparison, but I'm a film & TV critic!

Tensions are rising at Place de la Bastille, where police have begun issuing warnings to disperse. They have also blocked most of the exits from the Place de la Bastille.
“I don’t understand why they tell us not to rebel when all we study are people who rebelled—Rimbaud, La Boétie…” ( @humanite.fr is doing some excellent live coverage of the student protests) www.humanite.fr/direct_conte...

A gentle reminder that Macron’s government claimed yesterday that student protests were dying down. A claim that highlights just how disconnected they and their advisers are from the lived realities of young people in France. 🙃
This is in the context that cops are censoring protest by confiscating any protest signs they don’t like (especially those referencing police brutality)
State censorship’s little dilemma: In the above video you see that police approved - and chuckled over - a protest sign saying “Macron, fuck your teacher, not ours.” (referring to Brigitte Macron). Now we learn that Macron is furious it appeared on public service TV without Channel 2 apologising.
An important point: the protests began in working-class suburbs with large racialised populations, including Saint-Denis, north of Paris. This historic burial place of French kings now has a Black mayor, Bally Bagayoko, from the left-wing party LFI. White supremacy also underpins police brutality.
The mayor of Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko, literally used himself as a human shield to protect students from police violence
Fantastic thread on the French high-school protests. I can’t believe how modest these teens’ demands are (funding for basic educational facilities) cf. how savagely the cops are cracking down on them
Protests spread beyond the Paris suburbs, across urban and rural France. It now spans general and vocational high schools, small-town schools and universities, bringing together students from different social backgrounds and educational tracks.
Kate mckinnon is so gay lmao. you can see her brain vaporize in real time
always thinking about this video btw
I don’t know why I find this email subject line so hilarious

Love that China's official entry for the 2027 Oscars is called 'Once Upon A Time in The Middle East' (in US & Canadian cinemas 9 October!) Cheers to Letterboxd rando Darren who has made a list of everything using the "Once Upon A Time In" title format

HUGE news Kind of shocking that it's up to the High Court to make decisions democratic governments are proving incapable of making. And kind of shocking that it was a split decision. But massive congrats to everyone who made this happen. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Turns out my local pharmacist participates in the Take Home Naloxone program, as do all the others near me, plus various Chemist Warehouses in the Melbourne CBD. I'm definitely going to get some
You’re welcome! You can check if they do via this map, which is prt of the take home Naloxone program: experience.arcgis.com/experience/2...
I saw some people on the train with some serious nods and was reminded I did not have any narcan with me. In Australia you can get it for free at any participating chemist (there are many). You don’t need to give a reason. Narcan is inert unless reversing an overdose, when it can be life saving.
I did not even have Eva Marie Saint, who has died at age 103, on this thread I compiled of long-lived famous people
Famous people I was surprised are still alive: Imelda Marcos (95) Berry Gordy (95) John Astin (94) Sonny Rollins (94) Raul Castro (93) Leslie Caron (93) Barbara Eden (93) Dan Rather (93) Elaine May (92) Petula Clark (92) Joan Collins (91) Akihito (90) Giorgio Armani (90)
