Interestingly, the daiji for 7 is 漆 — the very same character that means urushi. So when 7 is written formally, the number shares its form with the word for lacquer. In everyday use, the simplified 七 serves for 7, but in the traditional formal set, urushi and the number seven are written identically

for example — documents such as banknotes, contracts, and family registers use more complex characters: 壱 for 1, 弐 for 2, 参 for 3, and so on. Their complexity makes tampering practically impossible, which is why you still see 壱万円 rather than 一万円 printed on the 10,000-yen note.

In Japanese, there is a special set of kanji used for writing numbers in formal or legal documents, called daiji (大字). Instead of the everyday numerals 一 (1), 二 (2), 三 (3), which can easily be altered by adding a stroke or two — turning 一 into 二 or 三,
