As AI detection and certification systems gain users, can we really know for sure if a text was AI-generated? And does it matter? Read our new article featuring AI detectors, voluntary certifications of human authorship, and provenance tracking. buff.ly/8YNgDzz

A human wrote this – believe me

From metadata to AI detectors, several organisations are aiming to provide evidence of whether a piece of content was AI-generated. It’s not an easy task.

Nature did a short piece on our preprint about how LLMs will affect the practice of science; my more detailed thread is below.

Scientists using LLMs will ‘do more, less well’, modelling study predicts

Research suggests that the combination of incentives to publish and the use of large language models will lead to more papers, but they will be less refined.

1. We—@eduede.bsky.social, @mjcrockett.bsky.social, Kevin Gross, and I—have a new preprint on the arXiv today, based on ideas that emerged during an @sfiscience.bsky.social workshop in November 2024: The unintended consequences of large language models as a labor-augmenting technology in science.

Excerpt of my contribution: "One of the most important messages a conference like this can send is: You are not alone. Not alone in wanting to cooperate across old ideological lines. Not alone in looking for fresh inspiration, talent, and ammunition in the battle for liberal principle."

Copyright Law Wasn’t Built for the AI Era. We Need ‘Learnright.'

In a market-based framework, companies would pay for the creative content used to train their AI systems, write Thomas W. Malone and Frank Pasquale.

1. Over the last few days I have received a set of queries about my research. The first one I thought was legitimate, and I was planning to answer when the second arrived, and then the third, from the same sender. Viewed together, they’re clearly LLM generated.
