I am at Science on Tap in Tempe,Arizona and wow, yikes… the New World Screw Worm is scary!! Sounds like a Covid-level emergency. Call your reps to express your concerns and urge swift response and funding. This is bad for wildlife, cattle, people…this fly eats living flesh. We want, we need it gone.

Happy #WorldBeeDay – here is a favorite, the death camas mining bee, Andrena astragali, on its namesake toxic flower, death camas (Toxicoscordion sp.). Only a few generalist insects can tolerate the toxic nectar & pollen, but this bee specializes it it. Some of us like our food spicy. #Bugsky 🌿🐙📷

A macro photo of a fuzzy orange bee with dark eyes on a cluster of yellow flowers, against a green out of focus background.

Happy World Bee Day! While the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) targets ground beetles, mosquitos, ticks, macroinvertebrates, and zooplankton with its standardized sampling, not bees, we have bees and all sorts of other organisms to discover in our invertebrate bycatch samples. ✨🐝🪲🐛

Three pinned green shiny bee specimens. The pins have museum-standard locality labels on them.

I saw Blephariceridae larvae on the bedrock of a small water fall while rappelling in California last week & it was such a delight to see them. They are so unique!! So specialized to waterfalls!! They have suction cups going down their ventral side so they can maintain their grip! Video to follow

Funky looking insect larvae on granite(?) rock. Under a thin layer of water. Large semicircle head capsule with two small floppy antennae.

Beautiful shot! But there are many perfect photos to share on earth day. Many perfect angles. The beauty can’t be captured in one shot. (Yes say this with the bias of a macrophotographer🤭) Only a collectively made collage of earth’s wonder& beauty can get close to the perfect visual.Share your shots!

My Aunt is hosting a station at an earth day event in New Jersey where she is encouraging people to leave old stems for bees.🐝 She found this old nest when she was prepping for the event! Looks like something went wrong for the bees but right for someone else. Do my bee friends here know what’s up?

New year, new life! Happy 2026. A Ceraunas Blue (Hemiargus ceraunus) lays an egg on the budding flowers of a plant in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. The mountains have been so green & full of butterflies this year thanks to the many rains. Last year was the opposite - dry and brown. ⛰️🦋🌿

Greetings from Costa Rica! I made it through immigration and customs. I am now on the group bus and headed to the field station with the 13 other students and our lead instructor for this cricket and katydid course.

Isa smiling at the camera and pointing to a “welcome to Costa Rica” tourism sign that is in the background.

I’m headed to Costa Rica for a cricket course! No not the sport but the insect! Can’t wait. I’ll bring you along - posting tidbits, encounters, and updates here in BlueSky :) 🦗🦗🦗🦗🎶
