🧠 Why is eating an enemy more taboo than killing one? New in PNAS: our colleague @turecek.bsky.social presents a mathematical model showing why cannibalism remained rare despite occasional benefits: repeated cannibalism amplifies pathogen transmission. 🔗 doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2605120123
🌐Local bird species richness is regulated—not by diversity-dependent extinctions, but by diversity-dependent colonization as communities approach equilibrium.
🐦 Is local species richness regulated, and if so, how? In a new paper in 🌍 GEB, our colleagues David Storch and @elbohdalkova.bsky.social show that diversity-dependent colonization regulates local richness, while extinction rates shape differences among communities. 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/geb....

Can ecosystems ‘malfunction’?
Can biodiversity equilibria be tested? David Storch & @graceridder.bsky.social argue that they can and that tests support the Equilibrium Theory of Biodiversity Dynamics as a parsimonious explanation of global diversity patterns. Read their response in TREE: 🔗 authors.elsevier.com/a/1nFXkcZ3X7...

Sad to hear of the passing of Robert Ricklefs - a giant of Ecology who simultaneously pushed forward big ideas at multiple biological levels yet took time for detailed natural history .. McGill does a nice job summarizing his impressive contributions 🌐🧪 dynamicecology.wordpress.com/2026/06/11/r...
Robert Ricklefs – in memoriam
Robert Ricklefs, a giant of ecology, passed away on Sunday. It is hard to overstate the extensive impact Bob had on the field. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in the US,…

Bob Ricklefs RIP. One of the giants of ecology. His textbooks were the gateway to the field for many students. His papers were invariably thoughtful, well-argued and provocative, even those I disagreed with. 🌏🧪🌐

Since January, I have gotten 8 desk rejections. Is this a new normal and a response to a deluge of AI-enabled papers journals are now receiving and/or dwindling availability of reviewers, or is our science not seen as novel enough (the latter I don't want to believe is true 😆)?
A sad task, well done—Brian McGill pens a tribute to Bob Ricklefs. One measure of Ricklefs’ influence: Ecology students from the 70s on were trained on “Ricklefs”: an imposing tome weaving graphs and equations together with fine, dense prose. Thanks Bob. dynamicecology.wordpress.com/2026/06/11/r...
