I’m retiring this week. What are your strategies for keeping cycling when you no longer have a commute? I’m not a gym person, activity is best when incidental to my day. Cycling is transport, but now I don’t have to travel 20km every day. Will I keep it up if I’m just cycling for cycling’s sake?

I agree with David, but also I’m in two minds about this police campaign. It’s suggesting 1.5m wheel-to-wheel. For my bike that would be around 1m wing mirror-to-handlebar. At 30mph that’s going to be scary and, I’d argue, unsafe (Alt text: pic shows car and bike on police mayo with measurements)

Many of the people who comment on posts like this clearly shouldn’t be in possession of a driving licence. And, yes, when the road isn’t wide enough to pass safely then you don’t pass. It’s not rocket science.

So the daylight cycle home was of course a joy But also to note that my e-bike has taken some of the faff out of cycling in the dark. No more remembering lights and batteries, removing them and carrying them around etc. Lights just happen, with no more thought when taking the car or a bus

This week in @rideleicester.bsky.social @bikeabilityuk.bsky.social we had a seriously visually impaired y5 child. We hadn’t sourced a trike or side by side or tandem. So they had to use the same bike as the others. They were the best at gliding, first to turn a pedal, and joined in on the road.

Important 🧵 from @isitabikelane.bsky.social about the place of cycling in maintaining mobility if you live with disability or as your mobility changes as you age. Safe routes for cycling are good for everyone and especially for children, older and disabled people to get around efficiently.

Bicycles can be mobility aids and even people who can't manage a bike can often manage a trike. They're a wonderful invention made even better by ebikes.

💯 Totally the same for me. Grumbling right hip that makes walking generally painful vs cycling a dream. Cannot walk 100m without some pain. Can cycle 100 miles. With different pains. 🤣

Good thread. 👇 When I had a broken hip I struggled to walk, and could only manage with a walking stick but cycling was fine. On a few occasions when I cycled to hospital, unlashed crutches from my bike then shuffled inside. Quite happily rode 110km home from Teesside, but walking was very slow.

I’ve seen active travel people celebrating the failure of NCP car parks I take the opposite view. All urban parking should be charged at full commercial cost, not undercut by cheap subsidised street parking I’d rather see multi-storeys remain while streets are cleared of car storage. Like in Japan
