Head beekeeper, Australian Parliament. Environmental scientist, cat lover, Japanese jujitsu black belt. Kinda nerdy. Urban Beekeeping - The City as a Hive in bookshops now!
Travelling for work for the past few weeks, but put in a Varroa treatment on the home hive before I left. Just a few mites showing on the bottom tray 😬
When you are trying to walk back to the accomodation after dinner on a work trip, but your colleagues are fauna ecologists and keep finding frogs.
Finishing a full week in Central Queensland, talking to farmers from Longreach to Cloncurry about national environment laws. Tough crowds, but they give you points for turning up! #EPBC
It was lovely having @aleighmp.bsky.social join us during our most recent inspection of the Parliament hives. A chance to see Varroa mite control in #beekeeping first hand! Can confirm that the #bees liked him!
A visit to the parliamentary beehives. Democracy needs cross-pollination. So does the garden. 🐝 #auspol
We just got our electricity bill for the month, now that we have a solar system with battery backup. This covers: - buying some grid power on cold, overcast mornings - running the entire house (all electric) - charging my partner's EV This is the end of winter, so we will be in credit from here on!
My work as an environmntal regulator is often difficult and contentious, but the scenery sometimes makes up for it!
Splendid Fairy-wren (Malurus splendens): 14cm (5.5in).This Australasian wren is aka simply the splendid wren or more colloquially in W. Australia as the blue wren. The splendid fairywren is found across Australia. Brilliant photo taken by Mitch Anderson in Australia #fairywren #australia #bird #bsky
Checking the Australian Parliament beehives yestrday evening - hives are still affected by Varroa mites but the treatments we are using seem to be helping.
This is why I have electronic trackers embedded into some of my hives - #bee theft is a real problem! www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...

RIP to my home hive - last month they were doing OK, but this month they have suddenly declined and died. Almost certainly a sudden influx of Varroa mites from collapsing hives in the surrounding area, happening a lot lately 🙁
Please enjoy this magnificent grain silo mural from Thallon, south-west Queensland

Dinner to tonight at our favourite restaraunt. A fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, and it always works beautifully #food
Birthday present from my partner - on book 4 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and loving it, so she got me the rest of the series! #BookSky 🥰
Checking my orchard pollination hives yesterday - on this organic farm nothing is wasted!
Marbled Geckos are always welcome in the beekeeping gear shed - so cute and great pest control!
This is a great idea - how we represent the world on maps influences how we think more than we realise. Travelling through Africa was a total head-spin, it is not just a little bit bigger than appears on the Mercator projection, it is a huge difference. share.google/OR1FKxlX8Sjg...

My partner found out that I have been using the lower drawer of the freezer to kill Varroa mite in the drone trap frames from the Parliament #beehives. I may need to go into hiding for a bit.
First spring inspection in the Parliament house #beehives - the pre-winter Varroa mite treatments worked well, we have six strong hives. Unfortunately the mite load coming in from collapsing hives is still very high 😬 Second round of treatments going in - Oxalic acid strips this time!
Such a specific list of things to suddenly loosen the rules around....
