At least in 2022, Northern resentment of the South had clear political effects. It moved people away from the Tories and possibly towards Labour. Southern resentment's effects are absorbed by other attitudes. Peripheral resentment, while prevalent, does not appear politically consequential.

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.

A good thread on the limits of 'democratic resilience' as a concept. Many similar issues too with a focus on fixing 'polarisation' (v. important to address for cohesion, but short-sighted if this overlooks the key political/economic pressures harming democratic trust and a sense of agency)

There's a lot of focus on democratic resilience from civil society actors at the moment, and rightly so, but I'm concerned there's not really a shared definition of what democratic resilience is, and often appears to fall back on a few ideas that I think are questionable.
