One of my geologist husband’s biggest pet peeves is when writers (or anyone) say “outcropping(s)”; the term is “outcrop(s).” So of course I’m aspirationally reading all of the ATLA novels (which I’m enjoying!! HIRE ME FOR ATLA IP I BEG) and noticing the half dozen ”outcropping”s 🥲

Fighting for the Freedom To Read was a cool counterpoint to the Rules chat. It was more informational and included more specific expertise! I also did a lot more research for this panel that is half of why I started this thread, haha.

Thinking about this topic and reading on it has reminded me that books are one of the few ways many kids can find the vocabulary of autonomy and personhood they need. And making reading fun is SO crucial to keeping that pathway open.

Most analyses of LLM tells focus on syntax (“not x, but y”) but at least in LLM fiction, the more glaring tells seem to incoherence at level of phrases (e.g., nonsense metaphors) and in the larger aesthetics of the narrative (e.g., genre, intended atmosphere or tone, narrative signposting, etc.).
