Sentinel-2 and wildfires: These last few days, a devastating wildfire has been raging near Los Gallardos in Spain - sadly resulting in multiple deaths and significant destruction. This pic was taken on 10th July by Sentinel-2A, the scale of the fire clearly visible.
Since 2014 #Sentinel1 satellites have provided data for applications where radar can penetrate cloud cover. Essential in my research on #peatland & #naturalfloodmanagement. I want to share sad news of the passing of my father David Lovelace last month. He was an amazing dad, an inspiration for me and others around him, and made a huge contribution to landscape history, mapping and nature conservation where I grew up.
After the wildfire near the Snake Pass summit at the beginning of May, our science team returned to the site to check on the sphagnum plugs we planted in the area over the winter. While our plastic monitoring equipment had melted in the heat of the fire, 98% of the sphagnum plugs didn't burn away.
