A contest for Labour leader? I don't think so. Not so much legitimacy to be had from 400 MPs & some thousands of party members. But Burnham shouldn't think that just being in office makes you legitimate ruler. It just gives you a platform from which you can - maybe - win support for a programme (1/)

Makerfield is a real victory for progressives. But this moment is bigger than one person or one party. Defeating Reform and the causes of Reform requires all of us, working together. The progressive majority must now be activated. Read our full statement below.

Andy Burnham's victory in Makerfield is a victory for mainstream Labour values. The people of Makerfield chose hope, unity and a radical change of direction. Labour must hear and heed the lessons of this by-election to defeat Reform and transform the country.

Andy Burnham's victory in Makerfield is a victory for mainstream Labour values. The people of Makerfield chose hope, unity and a radical change of direction. He won by offering a bold and popular left programme that can transform lives, raise living standards, and redress the imbalance of power and wealth that plagues the UK.

Andy won because he united voters around a positive vision for the future. He has proven that Labour succeeds when we are confident in our values, ambitious in our offer and willing to speak to the hopes and fears of communities too often taken for granted by our distant and centralised politics. He has also shown that Labour wins when it draws upon the energy, ideas and talents of our whole movement.

The route back to political strength is a confident Labour politics that unites, inspires and offers a new political and economic settlement. Labour should reflect carefully on what happened in Makerfield. The country is asking for a new chapter. The sooner we listen, the sooner we can build the broad coalition needed to defeat the politics of division and deliver the radical change that Britain needs.

Keir Starmer’s time as Prime Minister will be remembered for indecision and an unwillingness to commit to the difficult decisions. You can’t please everyone in Government, yet Starmer has uniquely managed to please no one. Compass on John Healey's resignation as Defence Secretary👇

Labour can be the party that drives real change again - but only if we set out a better path. This year’s NEC & NPF elections are an opportunity we can’t afford to miss. Nominate the Mainstream team at your next CLP meeting. Deadline is 26 June.🌹

Graphic which says: "This year, vote to reconnect Labour with its mainstream." encouraging people to nominate Mainsteam NEC and NPF candidates at their next CLP meeting.

The govt should treat the right wing press as it would treat (say) Stormfront - not as a legitimate news outlet, but as propaganda for a socially corrosive disorder, and withdraw all cooperation from it. It doesn't need the votes of that tiny minority that reads such rags.

“The acceptance that modernity is something that is given and can't be shaped... that is not politics.” “Democracy is the means, and the goal is to liberate the human spirit.” So don’t accept the rules of the game as they are! #ChangeNOW 🤝
