Rightwing economic myths could derail Burnham’s project – to destroy them, look to Keynes | Larry Elliott
Borrowing can be good, there is no such thing as the ‘nation’s credit card’, and, yes, you can buck the markets – as previous governments have shown, says Guardian columnist Larry Elliott

The UK can fund the triple lock and social care. Tax needs to change but primarily it’s the BoE that is the prob. Bond markets can be talked to. A country’s budget is not a household’s budget. For further info @annpettifor.bsky.social annpettifor.substack.com/p/its-time-t...

(4/4) ... a percentage which is mysteriously NOT unaffordable to many of our peer countries today.
PS DWP's own analysis shows that private pensions will not come to the rescue of younger workers. If the triple lock goes, it is what *would* have been their pensions which will be the 'savings.'
The new radical proposal to end the 'triple lock' for pensions will generate at least £15bn or at most £30bn for the Treasury we are told. That is equal to 0.5% or 1% of UK national income of £3 trillion. Won't go far.

It was absurd that Palm should be worth more than GM, or houses go up in value at least 10% every year. But it doesn't mean the person on the other side isn't sincere in their beliefs. Give them grace because being wrong doesn't imply they lack character. It just means they're wrong. 3/3
Jack Smith made it crystal clear that his investigation was sound and lawful, that the president had committed crimes and that the GOP attacks on him were the actual weaponization of our justice system. He showed courage and moral clarity and continues to be one of the heroes of this moment.
Jack Smith: "History teaches that the rule of law is rarely destroyed all at once. It's often weakened by attacks on the institutions and the public servants sworn to uphold it. Since January 2025, we have witnessed precisely such an effort."

The UK five-year yield which is my leading indicator for fixed-rate mortgages has risen to 5% this afternoon.
Burnham edges Labour closer to finally, maybe, being sane about Brexit. Over 10 years, £Billions of cost, thousands of business failures, mountains of red tape, wasted resources and lost opportunities later…. our govt may, at last, cautiously, start to be honest about the Brexit moronathon. Yay.
I am no Putin fan, but stoking war with Russia is unwise.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

In a wage-theft settlement, DoorDash now has to pay its workers around 100 times what it spent trying to beat Zohran Mam
