I think my most recent relapse of cognitive symptoms is starting to get better, which means I can read direct from text (rather than relying on text to voice) a little bit again. I revisited a book on medieval market morality that I've been reading as research for HOTBLOOD and this passage stuck out

AVARICE AND TRADE
The sins of the individual were therefore decried in estates theory as a cause of dissension in society, and traders and craftsmen came to be associated with particular vices.67 Traders were particularly apt figures to exemplify the deadly sin of avarice (or covetousness), which encouraged acquisitiveness and selfishness to the destruction of others. Covetousness was interpreted as an inordinate and selfish love of worldly goods, leading the avaricious man to use deceits, usury, theft, violence, false claims, sacrilege, simony, treachery, wicked crafts (such as prostitution or professional fighting) and gambling to gather riches. The avaricious did not think about God, their soul, the poor or the unfortunate in their pursuit of excessive gain. It was a vice that could never be satisfied and
knew no bounds: ‘þe see drinkiþ al þe watres of þe world; so þe couetous mannes wille swoleweþ [swallow] alle þe richessis of þe world, þerfore he is þus vnsaciable (þat is, vnable to be fulfilled)’.

Caveat that I'm not a translator, but I think the translation for the Middle English is roughly "the sea drinks all the waters of the world; so the covetous man will swallow all the richness of the world, therefore he is insatiable (that is, unable to be fulfilled)."

There Will Come Soft Rain is one of Bradbury’s best, I read it for the first time in 7th grade English and have thought about it at least once a month ever since. Highly recommend taking a few minutes to read it, treat yourself, and remember to stay out of the nursery

Today is the day the story There Will Come Soft Rain is set. An amazing and heartbreaking work of fiction for our modern age. Read it here:

Happy anniversary to the day a friend asked me get our Tarot read, and how the reader gave her a typical love life reading but when she did my reading all she said was “you need to get with either an Italian or Irish man” and when I asked for clarification she just said “ideally not from Jersey”

I am going through Bram Stoker’s earliest notes on DRACULA today - they include a list of the powers and features of the Count (then named “Wampyr” before Stoker stumbled on “Dracula”), many of which are never elucidated in the book…

• panters cannot pant hım; looks like someone else (38b)
• insensitive to music (38b)
• despises death and the dead (38b)
. is affected only by relics that are older than he is (38b)
• can create evil thoughts in others, banish good ones, and destroy will (38b)
• cannot be photographed; photographs come out black or like a skeleton corpse (4, 38b)
• can tell if bodies are dead or alive (4)
• sees man semingly dead and says "no" (4)
• has to be brought or carried over threshold. Dracula visits an asylum where he stumbles on the threshold (4, 16)
• named "Count Wampyr" (1)
• can determine and prove if people are sane (24)

Woke up with a symptom flare, audibly and visibly clutching my abdomen, and what does my cat do? Do you know how tall those Billy bookshelves from IKEA are? Do you know what it’s like to have 16lbs of mass descend directly onto your stomach from the top of one? Why not just stab me next time lol jfc

Hey Portland! Call to action for Chocolate, red-tailed hawk who will be released after window strike *into the same situation* at Daniels High School. Please email as appropriate to push for bird-strike proof windows. A screech owl recently smashed into them as well, plus dozens of smaller birds 1/3

As an Oregonian and fellow neighbor, Mel and I know that you know how valuable our wildlife is to our neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods would not be the special place it is without our wildlife and the habitats they rely on.

Will you send a message today to support installing commercial Window Strike Bird Film on the windows at on McDaniel High School and other schools that are having this issue? McDaniel and the current windows on the school are the cause of hundreds of bird deaths each year. This will only worsen as the habitat shrinks for our wildlife. A simple solution of commercial Window Film will mitigate this issue.

Chocolate will hopefully be released soon and he will go right back to his home which is at the McDaniel High School. Next time we may not be able to save him from a Window Strike.

Now is our chance to do something about this, but we can’t do it without your help. Portland Public Schools/McDaniel High School need to hear from you on how much you care about Chocolate and all of the other wildlife today!

Please use the information above and send your support for the Window Film to the following contacts:

Just a quick update to thank everyone who chipped in, reposted, and helped me out during yesterday's stress. Onion's home and doing okay! We caught a urinary blockage, which is serious for boy cats but treatable. After some fluids and meds he recovered, going back for a follow up in a month or two 💛

Had to take Onion to the emergency vet this morning. The docs say he's doing okay, fingers crossed it's nothing serious! I feel bad asking for help, but the vet bill is over $900. If you're able to help out at all I'd greatly appreciate it 🩷🧅 Paypal is jeeyon.shim@gmail.com, Venmo is Jeeyon-Shim
