it's ghost pipe season in the forest here. ghost pipe (monotropa uniflora) is a parasitic plant which doesn't make chlorophyll and gets its nutrients from the mycorrhizal networks found on tree roots. it's ephemeral, appearing fast and disappearing within days, and is psychoactive 🌱

Last night my neighbor saw me plunging my hand into the soil, grabbing a fistful of worms then raising them triumphantly above my head as I laughed and lightning crashed around me. Going to be difficult to explain that one.

i pick a handful of these grubs off my potato plants every day and feed them to our chickens. in this way the world alchemically transmutes potato plants into chicken eggs. nothing is impossible if you know the right middleman

turn your yard into garden. do it now! you don't need anything special! do it a chunk at a time. do it next to your existing garden if you want. this patch was de-yarded but bare for a few weeks. then the garden store set out a ton of free plants. they live here now 🌱

a local Little Free Library has issued a request for neighbors to refill it with books, ignoring the fact that if people don't bring the books back that size notwithstanding it cannot possibly be a library

i like my phone to count my walking when i'm doing chores. sometimes it feels like a lot but i check and it's way less than i expect. think about the marathon. 26 miles. but i only walked 1.2 miles today. good way to stay humble

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

i spent my vibrant years building a career and life centered around the advancements of technology. I genuinely did not think that the era would ever arrive where i detest it all and set my goal as a screen-free life in a woods house growing tomatoes and watching squirrels. im going hermit. thats it

New from 404 Media: Google Earth has introduced an AI feature that lets anyone fabricate completely bullshit satellite images. In our own tests, we added a “bomb blast and crater” to an area of Los Angeles. This is a misinformation time bomb, will 100% be abused www.404media.co/google-earth...

Many people are familiar with Eadweard Muybridge's motion studies, using early photography to answer questions about how animals (and human animal) moved. I was not, until today, familiar with "chickens; scared by torpedo (1887)" www.flickr.com/photos/bpldi... #photography
