This has just not been my experience. Gatekeeping? More like floodgates. I’ve met so many generous writers who’ve given me feedback, referred me to editors, and listened when I needed it. There’s always room for another storyteller, another story.

Seeing complaints online that authors 'gatekeep' information…! Absolute nonsense. There is no industry or craft in the world which is so comprehensively written about, studied, and discussed as fiction writing, and every author I know welcomes new writers who are serious about giving it a go.

If anyone scrutinized how my bookshelves are “organized,” they’d be appalled. They just aren’t. I have two freestanding bookcases and one built-in bookcase. The built-in’s shelves are random heights (no idea why; it’s an old house), so books go where they fit. How do I find things? Oh, you.

You can take the bookseller out of the bookstore, but... Mass Markets first, because I use stacked-shelving to get two rows on each shelf, alphabetical. Then Fiction, starting with anthologies by editor, then alpha by author. YA at the end, alpha by author. Nonfiction on separate shelves, by type.

If you see me today, this is the song that’s running through my head, because the heat index here is 120F.

So they create this amazing dynamic of "Aw, hi, yes, let’s hug!" counterpointed with "It’s made of KNIVES! STEP BACK!" We’ve also got @anthonycardno.bsky.social's Ensign Talus who is guided by the Prophets and keeps having his visions playing out in the middle of missions (mostly helpfully).
