While the finalists in the NZCYA NZSA Best First Book Award may be new names to readers, there's more to them than overnight success. We asked them about their paths to publication: www.thesapling.co.nz/nzcya-2026-t... #booksky #kidlit #newauthor #nzcya #pukapuka

Wellington! I’ve been working on something cool with a couple of lovely collaborators. Good Luck Craft Club is a monthly craft meetup for artists of Asian descent in the Wellington region. Central CBD locations, ticketed workshops, BYOC(bring your own craft) and a community craft box.

Graphic for Good Luck Craft Club. A meetup for artists of Asian descent in Wellington. The graphic is yellow and features a red diamond logo and some hand drawn elements such as embroidery thread, embroidery scissors, lanterns and a pan chang knot.

明けましておめでとう！ I have a tradition of spending New Year’s Day drawing the zodiac animal of the incoming year. This year’s the fire horse! 🔥🐎 The flames gave me a lot of trouble but I’m happy with how they turned out.

Hello BlueSky, hope you are well. I’m good, working on the production of Folk Remedy Book 2. Which is hard and a lot of work??? You think I’d have learned from last time, but apparently no. Finally building up my drawing stamina again. How have you been? Please share your art and/or cats.

I received a book of an English Manga created by Jem Yoshioka ( @jemyoshioka.bsky.social ). Its subject matter is YOKAI (Japanese folklore monster). It is familiar for me as a Japanese. Not only this, it is interesting story. 英語の漫画を入手しました。作者はジェム・ヨシオカさん。日本の妖怪を題材にした漫画です。馴染みやすいだけではなく、ストーリーも面白いです。

FYI relay dinner is real and I’m pretty sure I did invent it. (If you did I’m sorry for claiming it, but also let’s be friends because we obviously both have excellent ideas.) Too difficult to get all the food on the plate at same time? Don’t! ✨Relay dinner✨

Regular meal advice: Do meal prep so you have easy meals to hand when you’re low on energy! ADHD meal advice: So I invented this thing I call “relay dinner” where instead of cooking a whole meal at once I prepare and eat the components of a balanced meal one after another. Dunno why but it works.

Illustrating a 240-page graphic novel means I have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to character expressions. Which character matches your mood today? I’m feeling like C3. ✨☺️✨ All the expressions are from Folk Remedy Book 1, which releases September 23!

A mood chart of character expressions with 3 rows labelled ABC and six columns numbered 1-6. The expressions are of cartoon faces with a range of emotions.
