An orange 5 gallon bucket 2/3 full of water and yard detritus (leaves, weeds, grass clippings). Also in there is a fourth of a mosquito dunk tablet. The bucket is covered with an old window screen that has some holes cut into it. It's secured to the bucket with duct tape. The bucket sits in a shady section of the yard.

Allen’s hummingbird (I think), Pasadena California, March 2, 2026

A female Allen’s hummingbird (I think) sits on a nest built on a horizontal vine. She exactly fits in the nest with her neck and head above the edge. Her long beak faces left and slightly up and her left eye is visible. She is whit under the beak with a black spot at the base of her neck. A few black feathers dot the edge of the spot. Her flanks are grey. The nest is mostly light colored materials (cobwebs?) and has been decorated with white feathers at the top

A little bit of #VisibleMending this evening. I was supposed to be patching up tears along the inside waste of my hiking pants, but this sandal needed emergency repairs more.

A purple Vibram Five Fingers sandal-type shoe with a foot in it. Green stitches hold the straps together where they join up since the original dark purple thread has come undone.

A fancy plate holding dinner. Sauteed salmon, cucumber chunks, wild rice/grain medley, and sweet potatoes cut into fry shape and baked. A yogurt dill sauce is drizzled on the salmon and cucumbers. The wild rice is dressed with sauteed onions and shiitake mushrooms. The sweet potatoes have just salt and pepper.

My wife and I saw a new bird today! We had just commented that there were no cormorants at the lake, when a bird startled from the reeds near us. For the next ten minutes we got a really good look at the smallest heron we'd ever seen, the Least Bittern. #lifebird #birding

Time for the birds segment! Starting with a hoiho/yellow-eyed penguin at OPERA outside Dunedin, plus a pied shag. #BirdsNZ #Birds

The penguin has now made it past the beach onto the dunes, walking in the grasses. Mostly yellow stalks with a green bush in foreground.

The penguin is standing in front of tall grasses. You can clearly see the yellow band from its eye and going back. It's a penguin, so it has a white chest and black back and wings/fins/head.

A pied shag in a nest. Not a penguin! The eyes are blue with a yellow dot in front of the eye.

But first, the birds. People always like #Birds here. First three from the Old Ghost Road, and the last one from Travis Wetland, so this is #BirdsNZ with a bit of #mosstodon content.

A fantail/pīwakawaka briefly perched on a branch with its tail partially fanned out. It has a brown back, beige chest, and a white mark above its eye.

A South Island robin/kakaruai is a small bird on skinny legs. This one is mostly grey with beige/yellow underparts. It's in the moss and its face is partly covered by a plant.

Tomtit/miromiro standing in leaves on the ground with a black head and white/beige chest.

Much bigger than the previous small birds, this pukeko is in some short grass. Doesn't quite look like a chicken (or a takahe for that matter). It has a black back and a deep blue chest, with a red bill and the red continuing to the top of its head.

My commute to work is only a mile and a half. But that is enough time to see mockingbirds, swallows, American robins, starlings, a fox with a white-tipped tail, a cormorant, and a flock of geese ready to cross the road. And on the commute home, even an eastern bluebird! #birdcallOut
