It's hot, too. Lots of lil bubs out there panting today. But at least everyone in the neighborhood seems to put out fresh water for the wildlife. 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a Steller's jay (Cyanocitta stelleri), a large songbird with a deep blue torso, wings, and tail and black head topped with a tall crest. It's perched on a black metal railing in warm, orangeish-hued lighting with its back to the camera and its head turned toward the right of frame, while it pants with its beak open.A photo of a conifer forest silhouetted against a smoke-orange sky, caused by wildfire haze. Jagged tops of evergreens stand out against the glowing peach-tinted atmosphere.

Natural warming filter courtesy of wildfire smoke in the air today. I took this around 1:00 in the afternoon, and it looks more like golden hour. 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) crouched on a weathered tree stump in warm, orange-toned lighting. It's a sleek woodpecker with black-and-taupe barring on its back and wings, and its breast is covered in small black spots and a large black chest bar. It has a red malar (mustache) stripe marking it as male, dark eyes, a long dark gray beak, and a red spot on the back of its head. It faces right, set against a blurred green and gold background.

Update on those waxwing nestlings! And pics! I came back after work. They were still there and doing ok, and the parents hadn't left them. I brought a few things to rig up a basket in the tree to put the nest in. Don't know if it will work, but at least their chances of dying are below 100% now.

Hard to find my first bird photos since I've been taking photos of whatever mundane thing was in front of me, usually with bad cameras and lenses, for too long. But here's a great horned owl I tried to capture in 1996 for #BirdOfTheDay #Firsts. 📷🌿🪶

A scanned film photo of a great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) perched silhouetted on a large branch amid the tangled limbs of an oak tree, its ear tufts visible against a backdrop of a bright green, rolling grassy hillside dotted with more scattered oak trees. The bird is small and dark in the center of a busy composition.

I love Sunday Parkways. The North Portland one is not only a quick ride from our house, but has nice views of the St. Johns Bridge. And giant warehouse fires happening downtown.
