One of the sucky things is that the rush to jam GenAI in absolutely everything has ruined spell check and autocomplete. (Grammar check has never known the difference between there, they're, and their, so it's not a great loss.) Autocomplete used to be a great accessibility tool, but now it's trash.

This. Computer opponents in video games? Vital. Spell check? Actually great. Autocomplete? Pretty fine. Grammar check? Meh, but harmless. AI Summaries? Die in a fire. Gen AI? Fuck all the way off. Thought-destroying, idea-erasing chatbots that will happily talk you into delusion? Literal evil.

The AI assholes won't let us have even the tiniest corner of human creativity. They have to infest everything.

In real life,if I'm engaged in doing something and someone interrupts me to offer to help, generally I have to be as polite as I can and say if I need help, I'll ask for it. Modern software feels like that now (mainly why I avoid modern software where possible).

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. "I just use it for research" like it's neutral, like nothing built by big tech ever had bias baked in? "It helps me find papers." Okay, but do you think there might also be a chance the plausibility generators surface papers by men more often than women, for instance?

Heck, librarians would help for free! But Chat GPT appeals to the kind of people who don't ever want to admit that someone else might know something they don't. They'd rather get wrong answers or incomplete sources than ask a human for help.
