Note: NYC residents only. Also, they really mean _never_, apparently. I haven't checked out the form yet but I've been to the opera, including the Metropolitan, and from what people are saying, that would disqualify me even though it was like 35 years ago. Still a great thing! Go!

Never been to the opera before? Now’s your chance. We’re giving away 70,000 free tickets to the @metopera at the iconic Lincoln Center. Go to on.nyc.gov/opera to enter the lottery. There’s not a bad seat in the house.

The ebook of Mercutio is on sale in the US and Canada for $0.99, at all retailers, I think. Not sure how long that will be the case. It's a strange medieval prequel to Romeo & Juliet with bad fairies, Umberto Eco meets Susanna Clarke, going for a song at the moment www.kateheartfield.com/mercutio/

I made myself some bookmarks because I have a bunch of events and signings coming up, and they came out nice! Half my books on one side, half on the other. If I forgot a book or something, don't tell me.

Two bookmarks showing reverse sides. Five book covers on each side. The Swordmaster, The Magus Comspiracy, The Resurrection Plot, Alice Payne Arrives, Alice Payne Rides. The Chatelaine, The Embroidered Book, The Valkyrie, The Tapestry of Time, Mercutio.

Queries that I'm interested in right now: 1. Stories about relationships. Friendship or romance, don't care. 2. Sci-fi, especially optimistic sci-fi. Can you send me something about a non-dystopic future? Please?

Some thoughts on queries I tend to reject (and note, these are all very personal biases): 1. Stories set in the afterlife. I find it's very hard to determine what the stakes are. 2. Stories about royalty. 3. Stories about assassins. 4. Stories set in grad school. (more to come, I'm sure)

It's September, which means I have a new novel out this month! As early as Sept. 8 or as late as Sept. 22, depending on country and format (it's in ebook, paperback and audio read by Maria Nicola Johnson). The court of Catherine de' Medici, with ... vampires (I am making the spooky hands).

The Swordmaster

Coming September 2026 (the exactly dates within that month vary slightly by country.) 304 pages. Published by Rebellion, in ebook, paperback and audiobook narrated by Maria Nicola Johnson. This is th...
