The classics give everyone room to play. There's always another take. I've done 2 productions of "Midsummer..." 1 fairly traditional, 1 with 90s music added to make it a musical. A production of R&J I did had a blind Juliet. I did Hamlet where Ham was a lesbian with a non-binary Ophelia.

You could compare The Odyssey's adaptations to Shakespeare works like The Tempest. Old as balls, epic. For example I watched two productions of it, one at The Globe and one at Royal Drury Lane. One had the magician Prospero wearing a banana hammock with ray-bans and the other was Sigourney Weaver.
