This was such a cool project to be a part of! We used ML models to build a high-res (1.4m) land cover map, and combined terrain+weather data w/ algae+water samples from >200 lagoon sites over 4 years to understand connections between land use, precipitation, water quality, and microbial communities.

Extensive surveys on Mo'orea show that land use and rainfall patterns significantly influence lagoon water quality, highlighting the importance of integrated land-sea management for coral reef health. doi.org/hbcrmg

Are you an early-career biologist or ecologist who would benefit from an invited seminar? Would you like to come to UMaine next fall or spring to give a talk? Leave a brief comment with some info about what you do. I'm co-hosting our seminar series again, and am filling out our rosters.

Happy holidays and happy end of the year to all of you. Thank you for making 2024 a wonderful and exciting year for our society. Let's continue working towards Open, Reliable, and Transparent Ecology and Evolutionary Biology in 2025. Join us at: https://sortee.org/join/

I made one! I’ve realized when going to conferences that graduate students and early career professionals in the wildlife world are constantly communicating and will be working together later down the road. LMK if you want to be added, I def missed folks! go.bsky.app/FFFHs9U

Paper alert!! 🌎🧪🌾 We showed that large Arctic herbivores impact plant abundance by way of their effects on plant phenology: plants that emerge earlier under herbivory than under herbivore exclusion also had greater abundance later in the season, and vice versa. academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/ar...

Large herbivores link plant phenology and abundance in Arctic tundra

Abstract. Plant phenological dynamics have been well studied in relation to abiotic conditions and climate change, but comparatively poorly studied in rela

Write your code knowing that you will deposit it with your paper. Trust me, this is good for you AND good for science. You'll be more careful if you know everyone else will eventually see your code and everyone else can learn from your methods. It's win-win!
