It was an honor to be in conversation with @reveleth.com and @johannamellis.bsky.social on this episode of @endofsportpod.bsky.social about transphobia in and beyond sports and the necessity for solidarity among so many linked struggles over gender, race, and disability. youtu.be/tJT9qDjQtiE?...

SCOTUS ANTI-TRANS BIGOTRY

[picture of Kavanaugh]

Here’s the thing: I could probably come up with lots of creative, AI-proof online approaches. But finding the time to reflect an innovate comes at a premium. I often revamp my courses, but this is an order of magnitude much higher in redesign. AI is not a pedagogical crisis, it’s a labor crisis.

It’s such a bummer. Online/asynchronous/virtual teaching can be incredibly valuable and with a little extra structure can be an amazing and scalable resource but now AI has rendered the whole enterprise impossible.

The trans people in girls' & women's sports case is horrific in too many ways to fully account for, for me, right now. But just to say, in the big picture it is part of an effort to legislate trans people out of existence. "Fairness in sports" is a BS distraction from the intended extermination.

C19 American Lit friends: What are a couple of great go-to readings on Mark Twain's evolving political views from the pro-slavery and racist southern sympathizing he grew up in and retained for decades to his more fully-fleshed out left/progressivism towards the end of his career?

Good morning. I want to try to use summer to post more on here, perhaps professionally about what I am trying to write. But, priorities: Israel and the US are still committing genocide in Palestine. And also waging imperialist was in Lebanon and Iran. These imperial powers need to end.

Eight years after completing my PhD, I got a tenure & promotion letter today. Now Associate Professor of English and Director of Gender & Women's Studies at New Mexico Highlands University. I want to do some research to see if there have been any trans faculty given tenure here before me. 🤔

Something I haven’t seen mentioned is that more than TSA work at airports! Janitors, food service, retail, etc. I have no faith that security clearance to work at an airport will keep those people safe from ICE, especially brown and Black people with accents.

Stunned by all the “ICE isn’t gonna do anything more than what TSA already does” rhetoric. Untrained white supremacists who’ve been told by bosses they’re not subject to laws will have POC and women lined up in front of them to grope and abuse and they don’t even have to chase them.

Taught Loretta Ross's formative essay "The Color of Choice" in Feminist Theory this week. And it feels a type of way to return to it post-Dobbs, as the US is starving people to death in Cuba, facilitating a genocide in Palestine, waging war on Iran, helping Israel to murderously steal Lebanon's land

Do not let the Western media manufacture consent. Hold the anti-imperialist line. You can be against the oppression of Iranian people by their own regime and not use that as excuse to support a US & Israeli act of aggression. Western bombs do not bring freedom or liberation to the SWANA region.

This is a type of ICE "ruse," and is a tactic the agency has deployed for decades. In 2015, ICE went to my former client's house posing as cops and convinced his 16-year-old US citizen niece to call him home from work with a fake story (the "identity theft ruse" explained below), then arrested him.

Fact sheet from the Immigrant Defense Project: "Ways that ICE pretends to be local police: When Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents go to homes
or in the community to arrest non-citizens, they often tell lies or “ruses”
about who they are and what they are doing. ICE agents use ruses to
get into homes without judicial warrants, to obtain information, or
to arrest people outside of their homes. A common ICE ruse is that
agents pretend they are local law enforcement. ICE agents will say they
are “police” and purposefully not identify themselves as ICE agents.
This can be confusing as they are often dressed in plain-clothes or in
uniforms that do not indicate that they are ICE. ICE police ruses can
also happen over the phone.

Below is a list of types of ruses:

In Person Ruses:
- General Investigation Ruse: “We are conducting an investigation
and want to ask some questions.”
- Criminal Investigation Ruse: "We are investigating a crime, can
we ask you a few questions?”
- Identity Theft Ruse: “Your son is the victim of identity
theft, and we need to talk to him.”
- Photo Ruse: “Have you seen this suspect?”

Ruses (By Phone):
- Lost ID Ruse: "We found a lost ID."
- You're a Suspect Ruse: "We’re investigating a crime
and you are a suspect.”

In all cases, the goal is to get the person to come outside a home or go to ICE, after which they are identified, arrested, detained, and deported.

Next to the list of ruses is a dialog box with examples of comments:
- “POLICE, open up”
- “I’m Detective [name]”
- “We are the warrant squad”
- “We are from the XYZ precinct”
- “I’m calling from [local court name] to confirm your address”
- “I’m calling from the District Attorney’s office”
- “We are looking for X, who is a victim of identity theft”

Columbia President with NEW details: 5 DHS agents entered a residency with no warrant. They said they were police looking for a missing kid. Security camera even captures them showing pictures of the "kid." A campus officer asked for a warrant & their boss. They ignored him & took the student.

The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.

Don't let the liberals squash this moment like they have every recent anti-carceral movement by turning "Abolish ICE" into "Defund ICE" into "ICE needs better training" resulting in rehabilitation PR and ultimately increased funding for "reforms." It's "Abolish ICE" loud and clear, no qualifiers.

Federal immigration agents forced open a door and detained a U.S. citizen in his Minnesota home at gunpoint without a warrant, then led him out onto the streets in his underwear in subfreezing conditions, according to his family and videos reviewed by The Associated Press.

US citizen says ICE removed him from his Minnesota home in his underwear after warrantless search

Federal immigration agents have detained a U.S. citizen in Minnesota at gunpoint without a warrant. That's according to ChongLy “Scott” Thao, who says agents forced open his door, entered with guns drawn and led him outside in his underwear in freezing conditions.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports. And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.” Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

I know people on Bsky know this but I hope it filters out: The feds are OCCUPYING the Twin Cities. This is a blockade, a siege. They are shutting down economic and civic activity. They are conducting "papers please" stops. They are criminalizing being a bystander/witness. You could be next.
