I think this is fundamentally wrong but in an interesting way I will need to write about sometime. The key is a) consumers do not choose what is produced, or how, they choose between what is produced. This is a crucial difference

I think my most genuinely unpopular take is that a widely held and genuine consumer preference for cheaper, lower-quality goods, not private equity, is driving the decline in quality of consumer goods like clothing and housewares.

I love this essay. I feel like the tendency to throw away the whole unpleasant person started with Tumblr, and has unfortunately only gotten worse since Covid. Communities are messy, sometimes awkward things, but that's the joy of them - we take care of each other, even the Eeyores and Grouches.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. In the safety engineering literature, we don't really believe in "accidents". You build a system, it does a thing, if you don't like what it does, that's on you for having built it, and you get to restructure the system to avoid such unacceptable losses in the future.
