It was a tremendous honor to speak with the one and only Karl Friston – not about the Free Energy Principle, but for a change about the history of SPM. Did you know the very first version of SPM was programmed in Excel? That and much more here 👇👇 stimulatingbrains.org/79-karl-fris...

What are the systems in neuroscience that we really have something that we can call “explanation” at all relevant levels, other than reflexive feed-forward like circuits. Here are a few that I would argue are getting there. Obviously not complete explanations but genuinely satisfying.
Neuroscience has become increasingly concerned with prediction, and machine learning with causal explanation, with each field adopting methods from the other, writes @gershbrain.bsky.social. Will this bring us closer to understanding neural systems? www.thetransmitter.org/the-big-pict...
Early heads-up: There will be one postdoc and one PhD position in the field of learning/decision making open in my lab from Sept 2026. More information to follow soon, but feel free to already get in touch for informal inquiries! Please spread the word!

Out now as a preprint! We investigated the effect of outcome-uncertainty on learning and endogenous pain modulation in a probabilistic gambling task. Results show that pain inhibition from winning pain relief increases as a function of certainty in what action lead to the relief of pain.
