I'm thinking genuine, I'm thinking intimate, I'm thinking 22,000 person capacity venue in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world.

@jmcelroy.bsky.social Hi Justin, got a non CBC work question (related to Vancouver public transit) if you'd be open to dm'ing! Have a wonderful day!
Ask my friend and collaborator some questions!
I promised to answer some reader questions in this week's newsletter and want to give Bluesky folks a chance to join in, so drop your burning questions below! I'll tackle them here and maybe snag some for the newsletter. #AMA

Here is a journalism and disability journalism panel featuring Shruti Rajkumar and me, moderated by @emilybeitiks.bsky.social at @sfdcc.bsky.social, where I talk about my experience @motherjones.com. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx3o...
Don't forget that we're always looking for folks to highlight as part of our 'Signal Boost' series! Send us an email today. IDs in thread.
Some days are filled with bad news and then you get an email that the biggest gripe with your niche laptop is going to be fixed and you become tempted (sorry @markyarm.bsky.social and all others I've pitched to over the years) to pitch a very niche PC hardware story on why this makes you happy.
Yes anding this to say, or--and I'm about to sound grumpy--it is being written about and readers (and this includes fellow journalists) are not reading broadly enough to find that coverage.
If the criticism is "why don't journalists write about X?" the answers usually are: -a word count limit of 600 or less -a publishing quota deterring longer stories -an editor shot down the pitch or cut that detail or angle -a beat reporter was laid off -freelance rates of $250 to $350
Canadian journalists, please help me out to spread the following message: If you are a freelancer with CBC (or an employee, but this is aimed at freelancers) who needs support given the current wildfires in Canada, please get in touch. John@Jloeppky.com.

Mitch McConnell's Disability Isn't the Story. His Fitness for Office Is. - Disabled Journalists Association
Speculation swirls about the life and health of the senator from Kentucky. But for elected officials, should fitness for office and disability be conflated?

Don't miss this Thursday's DJA Community Meeting! ID: A flyer inviting people to a July 2026 Community Support Zoom Meeting. The design features a pale yellow background with the DJA logo in the upper left and a pink banner in the upper right that reads “Thursday!” in large white letters.
if generative AI was really inevitable we would see one person who fucks that uses it.
I was too busy getting stung by a swarm of wild bees this morning to boost this but uh I'm still 38 subscribers short of my goal. Progress has been slow! Please repost to help me out. The next edition of my newsletter drops Wednesday and will be subscriber-only, so it's a great time to join!
📣 I'm running a subscriber drive for the rest of this month. I want to sign up 40 more annual subscribers—enough to hire a freelance fact-checker to work on all of my original reporting. I'm offering half off annual subscriptions to help make this happen; that's $40 for the year. Will you join me?
Resharing so people read @nikostratis.com but also to say, I worked in some of the evacuation centres in the late 2010's. It's an experience that I will never forget and both lots of media coverage and social media discourse on this is exhausting to read/watch.
Seeing a lot of jokes and whatever about the fires, but these fires are devastating. Homes and lives and communities are gone, and will continue to dissapear as the problem gets worse. Homes burn as our leaders announce pipelines while flipping pancakes at a fake rodeo.
For a possible journalism project. Looking for topics that may seem, at first glance, like they aren't connected to disability or disability culture. Please comment or DM any that you would like to see me cover!
To s.e's point, even figuring out who counts as a small business in the US and Canada is really odd. Depending on industry, gross revenue, headcount, and location. Case in point, the number is always higher than you'd expect.
I didn't realize $10m in gross receipts was a small business.
Following up on this with reporting I helped with because my dear friend won't mind. If you want to read more about how disaster recovery doesn't meet the needs of disabled people, check out this article from @discojourno.bsky.social discojourno.com/national/dis...
I was told by a worker at @hi-advocacy.bsky.social today that a hospital where disabled people specifically received treatment was decimated in the earthquake, leaving many dead. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
After months of 'yeah, I need to do this,' I have finally finished my will/gotten it witnessed, so let this be your prompt to do that if you haven't done it already. Dying intestate is a real pain in other people's asses & you don't want a situation where shitty relatives get your shit by default.
If you're going to be mean to Julia, just be mean to me instead.
For disability pride month, everyone be nice to me!!!!
If anyone is looking for an experienced journalist (me) to teach at their university or college, please reach out. Finally feeling solid enough in my career to believe I can teach this as an instructor.
Rereading my MFA thesis (yes, really) and it's such an odd experience.
Reminder that I'm a freelance reporter, contributor @truthout.org, and I run a newsletter covering politics and organizing. Please reach out with tips re: attacks on public education, divestment campaigns, local regulation of data centers, and all things disability. Contact in bio. RTs appreciated.
There is something vaguely dystopian about one of my Google accounts wishing me a belated happy birthday.
Is there a good article on how frustrating it is to try to learn web design when all of these platforms who used to be focused on learning boil down to "just use AI" whenever I search anything?
I'm looking for another org or two that could speak to local efforts to cut ties with an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force. A handful of cities have done it, including Portland and Oakland. I want to know who's next! 👀 This is for reporting @truthout.org. RTs appreciated #journorequest

In case you missed it, a big project I worked on came out last week. I'd love to have you read it (and yes, Canadians, there's a lot of crossover even if the package is focused on the rural US)
A big project that I edited (my package editing debut) just launched today. Please give it a read and, if you're so inclined, support our work. Really proud of this. Thank you, also, to @grist.org for the support. discojourno.com/about-dja/dj...
