Absolutely stone cold dedication to a work of popular history
We are driving to Wales on holiday. My wife has made a playlist of Welsh hits for the journey. I am referring to it as Absolute Bangors.

*snarls* When I drop four cubes of ice Chimingly in a glass, and add Three goes of gin, a lemon slice, And let a ten-ounce tonic void In foaming gulps until it smothers Everything else up to the edge, I lift the lot in private pledge: He devoted his life to others.
* I once lost a poetry recital competition judged by the (teetotal) Irish critic and historian Owen Dudley Edwards on the grounds that, because I was (probably) quite a nice person, I couldn't do full justice to the voice of the poem I had chosen to recite - Larkin's 'Sympathy in White Major'
So what I'm hearing is that, sometimes, even Christopher Nolan nods
Re the Emily Wilson discourse - her Dad (A N Wilson) was the king of literary feuds. A good family tradition. Best one was his feud with Bevis Hillier who hoaxed him into including a fake letter in his biography of Bejteman where the first letter of each sentence spelt "AN Wilson is a shit".

A new Peterloo jug is news, because all known examples are printed over a leftover batch commemorating an admiral. This one is part of a new batch on a purpose-made jug, indicating sustained demand. On display soon at the People’s History Museum. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

This makes me think that, whether they know it or not, most British people who write a bit of poetry are imitating George Crabbe
My friend Simon has just sent me this astonishing poem that was in his local (Exeter branch) Wetherspoons magazine.
I took a phone (not my phone) to the phone shop to be fixed today. They asked me to scribble down my number for when it was done. In the context, it occurred to me what a miracle of convenient technology a biro and a lined ring-bound notepad would seem to most of the rest of human history.
