Better known as Newbattle at War on 'Twitter' Grandad, amateur filmmaker 🎥 and military historian. Author of Midlothian at War, With a Pick and Rifle and co-author of Only Remembered books. My 4th book Midlothian in WW2, I'm proud to say is now out.
Took me a wee while, and a bit of help at the end, but the bike is back in business and through it's MOT.
Nearly there with the latest book about Gorebridge and District in the Great War, which I've titled "The Lads that Marched Away". Waiting for a proof copy to arrive for checking. Just shy of 300 pages.
An article I wrote some 8 years or more ago. The fundraising efforts of Newbattle School in the Great War, they were second only to Eton. As the Times wrote "All the more remarkable that their fathers are mostly miners."

Last weekend saw my pals, the Scots at War living history attend History in the Park at Craigtoun Park in Fife. As a local event, there was only one regiment tgey could portray, and had a great time bringing to life The Black Watch of 1914!
Good grief, is really 9 years since this project? Filmed at the WW1 trench project in Pollok Park, Glasgow by myself and a crew from STV youtu.be/6rM-qLjzIps?...

If you'd told me a few years ago I'd be doing this as a hobby I'd never had believed you. Certainly keep the old 'grey matter' ticking over.

Well the proofs of 'The Heroes of the Great War' arrived today, slight glitch on the spine od hardback version, sorted very quickly, paperback all good. Launch it over the weekend.
Well, proof copies are on their way. Fingers crossed Heroes of the Great War will be out shortly. Quite unbelievably my 6th book, never thought I had it in me.
A young lad I know who is a detectorist, dropped this off last night. It was jet black, but I gave it a gentle clean & it's a 14-15 Star to Dvr J Rafferty 1789 RFA (TF). I did some digging & found he was 19, from Uphall & KIA 6th April 1917.
Into the 'final furlong' now. Checking and rechecking stuff, but this is looking like the final cover of 'The Heroes of the Great War'. The cover is based on a booklet of the same name, published by Newbattle Parish Church just after the war.
My latest book, in which I write about the men and women in CWGC graves here in Midlothian. lulu.com/shop/john-dunc…
My latest project at the proof stage. Information on the service men and women buried here in Midlothian.
And now a word from Ronan about my book. Good lad, and it only cost me an ice cream 🍦
Just a reminder that Midlothian in World War Two is still available should you fancy an autumnal read. lulu.com/shop/john-dunc…
