In front of Kidwelly castle there is a monument to a Welsh warrior princess, Gwenllian ferch Gruffyd, who led an army against the Norman invaders in 1136 and was captured, with her two sons, and beheaded. The field behind the castle where her execution took place is still called Gwenllian’s field.

I bought this book as my father, who died in 1975, was in the Royal Artillery in World War II. This generation are almost gone now, so I am very glad indeed that their own personal histories have been set down in published form.

Kidwelly Castle is a 12th century Norman Castle in the town of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. It sits on a hill overlooking the town, and apparently featured in an episode of the 1980s tv series “Robin of Sherwood”
