I must have read the Odyssey in high school but I have zero recollection, and Greek mythology just never clicked for me as an area of interest. But between my daughter getting into it, and the movie discourse, I've finally been diving in. Turns out, this "xenia" thing -- pretty useful concept!

Makes me think of one of my favorite NYC moments, when *three* different people stood up on my train and started preaching at the same time. Led to a real-time war of ideas, crowd switching sides, heckling, very fun.. (to state the obvious, that is fine because you can switch cars at the next stop)

There was probably part of me that thought "oh my kid will just eat whatever we eat" and of course that's gone out the window. It's been replaced by a theory, which I think is true, that being picky about food is one of the first/few places a child can actually exert some agency. So I get it.

My daughter recently had the idea - completely unprompted, she thinks she invented this entire concept - to buy some Chuck Taylors and draw on them with markers. I think this is just a hard-coded human instinct.

I quite liked the movie and the big idea about guilt that Nolan lands on, but this point is well taken - it didn't feel like everything was building towards it in a cohesive way.

6. Nolan tries to pack a lot of Incidents and Big Ideas into this film, but they do not seem to me to hang together coherently on the level of his own plot and the movie's constructed system of values. Instead, it's foisting a didactic point about Our Times onto the plot without integrating it.

Americans have more confidence in higher education than in big tech companies, and the gap is growing rather than shrinking. The higher ed-doomsday pundits need to get on board with the real vibe shift in public trust that is happening right now.

This is exactly what I run into with conspiracy theorists — a stray, unverified claim gets treated as if it debunks the real story, and it almost always falls apart under scrutiny. Wild to hear that pattern showing up at 60 Minutes as Cecilia Vega describes it.
