Militant liberal. Aspiring re-education camp counselor. Filibuster abolition enjoyer. Look down the political game tree. What's at the end of all those off-equilibrium paths?

Linear B tablets are almost all boring administrative stuff, but they do include transfers of goods to temples for sacrifices or whatever, and from that we know that bronze age greek religion was way different. For example: Aphrodite seems to be an archaic age invention.

this is very cool, a lot of fun to read - and one of the many takeaways from it is that Homer is already sort of "non-canon" vis-a-vis previous Greek religious practice, as is a lot of what i'd call the "D'Aulaire's model" of "Greek mythology" that we've gotten in the modern west

I'm skeptical precisely because the Democrats are the small-c conservative party now, and are therefore the most prone to inertia. Can't do a thing that nobody in living memory has done because that would be Too Radical.

One of my big uncertainties about the near future is whether Congress, having once constructively dissolved itself, can will itself back into existence next year or not

Starting next week pools are gonna be closed on weekdays in Sac while temps are still in the 100s. One may think “Huh maybe we should raise the tickets above $3-5$ so we can keep the pools open” But user fees are inequitable. So in the spirit of ensuring equal access the pool will be inaccessible.

The weird thing is that... if these guys are genuinely unhappy with the staffers that Heritage sends their way, they can just hire other people? Like nothing says you have to hire from GOP think tanks. You can hire whoever you want.

Not only did they absolutely beg for this, they made it so that “merit” was synonymous with being white so now you’re stuck with precisely the kind of moron who believes that. www.politico.com/news/magazin...

Everyone knows what the problem is: The organizations that bring young staffers to Washington, D.C. have spent the last decade prioritizing blind ideological loyalty instead of competence or intelligence,” said a senior GOP congressional staffer, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel issues. “We have a generation of rabid, incompetent idiots.”

Yeah, this is basically right. If you're going to do violence, you need to either 1) ensure it looks like there's no real potential for collateral damage that anyone might feel personally threatened by, or 2) make it look defensive and highly sympathetic.

Only defensive violence can help anything. If you need to be violent to survive, you do what you have to do. Targeting 'the system' only accomplishes anything when there is large scale opposition that recognizes that the system is destructive and won't change otherwise.

I have a weird theory that some percentage of consumer electronic devices (especially TVs) have volume adjustments watt scale rather than decibel scale, so that only the first 5-6 out of 60 are useful and 30-60 are indistinguishable (and extremely loud).
