Since taking over CBS News last fall, Weiss has actively shifted the network to the right in an apparent effort to capture some of the conservative audience that regularly watches Fox. At the same time, she wants to appeal to the supposed “70% of the audience that identifies themselves as center-left to center-right,” as her boss David Ellison asserted after he purchased her anti-woke blog The Free Press. The problem is that her strategy appears to be driving an increasing number of CBS News’s core audience away while failing to attract any of Fox’s viewers. In fact, according to Nielsen data obtained by Zeteo, the news network’s weekday offerings are in danger of getting passed by Murdoch’s cable news programs head-to-head. During July, ‘CBS Mornings’ averaged just 1.623 million total viewers per day, compared to the 1.436 million that ‘Fox & Friends’ pulled in for the month. The gap between the shows, now at 13%, has narrowed considerably. When Weiss became the head of the network, ‘CBS Mornings’ held a 26% advantage over Fox’s morning program. July was the lowest-rated month in ‘CBS Mornings’ history. And while the summer months typically bring lower ratings for news shows, the gap between ‘CBS Mornings’ and ‘Fox & Friends’ is tighter than it was last July – when the CBS show held a 23% advantage. Additionally, ‘CBS Evening News’ is on track for its worst month since Weiss installed Tony Dokoupil as its anchor, averaging just 3.814 million total viewers a night. It is also the fourth consecutive month that the program has attracted fewer than 4 million viewers. When reached for comment, a CBS News spokesperson shared a Paramount press release boasting that ‘CBS Evening News’ was narrowly up 2% in total viewers compared to last year, which was the program’s worst July in history.

To do a quick back of the envelope calculation, hiring a 21 year old on minimum wage in 2024 cost me: Pay: £19k NI: £1.5k Total: £20.5k Today it would be: Pay: £25k NI: £3k Total: £28k That's about a 36% increase in cost! The NI shift alone is basically a flat £600 more per employee.

My Dad died the other day. He was born in Chiswick when George V was King. Dad's father was a battery salesman and his mum a piano teacher. He mostly grew up in the Harrow area. He helped build an air raid shelter in the garden in WW2 and watched the skies glow over London during the blitz.

This would extend the cliff edge problem and incentivise gaming/appeals - why not just bite the bullet and move to a simple % rate which is simple, fair, and much more in line with almost every other advanced economy? Why do we have to make things difficult for ourselves?

all the ‘counterpoints’ here are mis information. The Uk has too few empty homes, far fewer than most peers due to lack of supply. Tesco gross margins are ~1% and it is not the reason food is expensive. There was no 25% real term cuts in NHS funding. Tax evasion is most small business and plumbers.

Ed Davey has gained seats in every election he has led the Liberal Democrats into. Kemi Badenoch has lost them in every cycle and led her party from second place to fifth and fourth in Scotland and Wales respectively. They are not comparable leaders.

I’ve reached the age where I’m always ready for bed at 10pm and I don’t need to set my alarm to wake at between 5-5.30 to take the dog for a walk or whatever. I don’t know if this is good or bad.
