So, it hasn't been this dry since my house was built. "Neat"
The contiguous U.S. averaged precipitation total for 2026 to date is an ominous one: a mere 4.79". That’s the lowest value on record for any January-to-March interval, including such notoriously dry periods as the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The previous record low was 5.27", set in Jan.-Mar. 1910.

Disc golf/ultimate. Cheap sports that can be played with 1-22 people and have a history of "spirit of the game" rules, mixing genders, and can be played with a range of equipment/playing fields. I'm biased as hell, but I stand by what I said. :)
"free/cheap/non-toxic youth sports" feels like one of those skeleton keys that would have knock-on effects accidentally fix 100 unrelated things about America or, you know, even if it didn't, at least a bunch of kids would be able to have fun playing sports
Sometimes I help with studying vertebrates. Fun review paper led by Leah McTigue - I do think folks interested in drought and insects can learn a lot from it, too. I did!
New paper from our lab, led by Leah McTigue We reviewed 40+ years of research on drought affects on wildlife: 66% of single-species responses were negative, only 2% positive. As droughts intensify under climate change, wildlife are in trouble. 🌍🌐🧪 📄 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Northern Colorado people, you have Valentine's eve eve eve plans now!
Anyone dealt with challenging an "Ineligible" determination on a GRFP proposal? A student's proposed was DQ'ed stating: "Applicants must select research in eligible STEM or STEM education fields." However, Ecology is clearly listed in the solicitation. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo... Any wisdom?

I am convinced I recently saw a paper on heat + humidity effects on wild bees with heat waves having little effect except within the presence of altered humidity. Anyone have a reference? Or am I imagining stuff?

I need a version of The Flaming Lips at War with Mystics where Trump's name is censored out of track 2. Perhaps just a general media blackout of the guy from his cameos in 90's and 00's music/TV/movies in general. Always a jarring bummer when he appears in otherwise nostalgic stuff.
