SKANK on the cover of SHOWBIZZ magazine from Brazil - A man with a corn on the cob and a woman in a bikini

i just finished going through popnable's records for the countries it lists that i'm interested in, and i now have another thousand+ unheard 2026 songs in my queue. this will probably last me through the end of the year if i keep adding new ones at the usual rate.

I caught up on my 2026 music queue last night. Of course more has been added today, but I thought I'd share some of the stats I've been keeping, not because anyone else finds them particularly fascinating but just as a measure of what I am prioritizing these days.

i have very fond memories of reading this entire event in the back of a pickup truck on the way to and through Mexico, but i also fondly recall heartily disliking its stabs at futurity in the sober light of a living room re-read as a convert to Seth/Ware/Brunetti-style early-20C cartooning supremacy

#EventsDearBoy 5. DC ONE MILLION (1998, DC) This is the Grant Morrison event where they play nicely with others, crafting a fantastical future for the DC Universe and opening its gates for other creators to have fun with. And they do - no other event has such an excellent tie-in hit-rate

In my teens my answer was Lord of the Rings because I was a dork. In my twenties my answer was a Gatsby/Brideshead/Howards End tie because I was a snob. In my thirties my answer was Leave It to Psmith because I was a poptimist. In my late forties I just think about everything I've yet to read.

What is your favorite English-language novel? (Free spaces for Middlemarch, Pride and Prejudice, and Moby Dick -- what else you got?)

First comic books: The Crusaders (Chick)/the Christian Archies (Spire)/Adventure #350 (DC), all in a family friend's garage, re-read every Easter when we visited (First comics of any kind: almost certainly Peanuts or Garfield paperbacks) Impression: fear/fascination/wonder/nerdy cataloging impulse

If you’re a comics fan, what’s the earliest comic book you can remember reading? And what kind of impression did it make on you?

my youtube algorithm is very offended that i'm not clicking on new ari g and selena g videos: look just because the farflung audiences who love the global music i do also keep up with u.s. pop girlies doesn't mean i have to

spent all day today driving around town to make deliveries and playing my new-music queue and damn you know what sounds really great coming out of car speakers? kizomba

my comics reading schedule has been thrown off by my usual inconsistency of habit, but i did finish this dark/funny/charming/mysterious/resolutely low-key manga last night, which thinks through the ramifications of its absurd premise and doesn't pull its punches

The cover to Fantagraphics' 2023 English edition of Minami's Lover by Shungiku Uchida (1987). A highly-saturated drawing of a tea mug seen from above with a small woman hiding behind it. A sticker design reads "for mature readers."A page from Minami's Lover, in which a tiny woman and a normal-sized man express affection.

Read Felipe Hernández Cava's Lope de Aguirre trilogy, each chapter drawn by a different major artist. Breccia fils gives the Amazon lushly illustrative texture, del Barrio's shadowy ink concentrates on psychological tension, and Castells' loose abstraction exposes his subject's spiritual barrenness.

Our next release in the Recovered Books series from Boiler House Press is a major event: the first new edition since the 1980s of Gale Wilhelm's We Too Are Drifting, the landmark 1934 novel that was the first open and unapologetic treatment of lesbian relationships in American literary fiction.

the final of my three nominations to make it into this poll of 1996 songs is Lady Saw's "No Long Talking," a dancehall demand for gratification that rings like a prophecy of half my listening in the 2020s
