The contrast between the number of media requests I got when rich people on a cruise were facing a deadly, but contained outbreak versus now that some of the poorest people in the world are facing a deadly and devastating epidemic is just so so stark and it just really annoys the hell out of me.

Took younger daughter (who wants to be a paleontologist) to a lake near Peterborough last night. We found these Jurassic microfossils-teeny ammonites & crinoid ‘ossicles’-these little rock stars were part of the stems of crinoids/sea lilies-animals with 5 axes of symmetry related to sea urchins 🐚

In the 24 hours since the Supreme Court's majority ruled to demolish the Voting Rights Act's remaining protections, Louisiana and Tennessee have already signaled that they'll redraw their congressional maps with the clear effect of shutting Black voters out.
In the latest @ghpoliticspodcast.bsky.social episode, I sit down with Dr. Lioba Hirsch, and we talk about her new book from @plutopress.bsky.social, #Antiblackness and #GlobalHealth podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s... @madhupai.bsky.social @ethnography911.bsky.social @seyeabimbola.bsky.social
Today’s Supreme Court ruling guts the Voting Rights Act and turns back the clock on the foundational promise of equality and fairness in our election systems.
We must understand that the Voting Rights Act was not merely about ensuring Black Americans rights, it was about democratizing America. This ruling is not just a decimation of Black rights and Black Americans’ ability to have representation, it is a fatal blow to multiracial democracy.
Can you imagine going back to 1776 and telling the Founding Fathers that in 250 years, the King of England would be standing in the United States Capitol lecturing American lawmakers about the importance of democratic norms?
