My Gen Z employees have taught me that putting the !! sticker on a text means you agree with what the person is saying and not “omfg are you kidding me?!?” (as I had been using it frequently) and now I’m spiraling.

You know what they say: when people are struggling in their day-to-day lives and feel like the American Dream is not possible for them, their main focus is “electability”. That’s what gets them energized about the future!

Authors and journalists are doing more first-person (hello 2010s blogging) and embracing "mistakes" in writing to prove they're not chatbots. There's even an “anti-Grammarly" app that leaves in typos and signs off "sent from my iPhone" to create more authenticity: www.wired.com/story/more-t...

I get that budgets are tight but choices like this do so much signaling for what students should prioritize (and create awkward situations for the faculty who are forced to fill in the gaps). Do you want students who are competitive on the job market? Y then make a grant a downgrade in QOL?

UC Davis will no longer pay the difference so that GRFP recipients earn the same as other students. So mid-PhD students will lose nearly 25% of salary & new students will make less than their peers. Apply for the GRFP, it’s a wonderful help to your career. Just don’t come here if you get one.

The simple fact is, there are only well balanced incentives to do simple science communication if you really, really want communicator to be part of your brand. For everyone else, the safest thing for your career is to shut the fuck up and hope someone reads your paper in ten years. Not good!
